i just got an 87 corolla, nothing special, definitely needs a little work, but i'm one of those that can't leave anything alone. i'd find a way to mod a little red wagon if i had one. anyway, i was wondering how i can tell what engine is in the car. the engine family code under the hood says "hty 1.6v2hff5" the vin tells me it's a corolla deluxe and some site gave me 5 different engine codes "3a-c/4a-c/4a-gec/4a-gelc/4a-lc". all of this means nothing to me as most of my automotive experience is with domestic muscle. can anyone help?

oh, and what engine would be preferable or could be swapped into a 4dr 87 corolla?

you could swap a 4AGE with no problem....just change the ecu (if you engine is carborated; and i know at least two of those engines are carborated) and some fuel stuff.

Or the 4AGZE...it is the supercharged version...but you would have to do more work. YOu would definately have to change the ecu and the fuel pump and remount an intercooler (or get a hood scoop), and you would have to build up the drivetrain after a while.
