How to tell if you have transponder?

22917 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Schuy
I bought a used 2001 Camry LE a year ago and recently lost the master key. While searching for a replacement, I noticed most 2001 Camry keys list "transponder". I don't think my car has it, was this a standard feature or only for models that included alarms/keyless entry?

I do not have any blinking security light on my dash or anywhere. Can I just pick up a regular blank key?

Sorry for my ignorance but I appreciate any help.

I think only the XLEs and V6 models have keys with transponder chips.

Okay, I have a 4cyl. Thanks for the quick response. Hopefully the blanks the locksmith has arent too ugly :sosad:
Hmm, I have the 03 v6, but my key has no mark on it..... I can't tell if its transponder or not..... Any ideas?
Easy test:

Take one of the spare keys with no rubber/plastic -- just bare metal and start the car. If it runs, you don't have a transponder.

Had a '00 ES300 and originally there was 3 keys for the ignition all w/ transponder, one of which was valet w/ no trunk/glovebox entry. His may have been the same.

Nah I got two keys both with seperate central locking and boot release keyfob. One is black and one is a dark grey.... both covered in rubber.... with no evidence of a transponder.... I have the little security light in the car tho, the one that takes up the left hand drive hazard button spot.
If your car came with 3 keys all with plastic on the heads, you have an immobilizer system on your car. The Grey headed key is the valet key. The difference of the is keys is the tip. It's shaped differently. This allows it to work or not work in certain locks in the vehicle.
