I have three other Toyota's and decided I needed to get something with a few hundred thousand less miles lol. I have a 2013 Camry and love it, but the check engine light has already been on. The light went off and the dealer doesn't seem to think it is anything. Any words of wisdom? The codes are P0441 and P1604. I looked and they don't seem huge and I don't want to end up paying for something. It was a certified Toyota vehicle.

I refer to code P1604 as the strangest code ever. I first ran into this code on my late model Tacoma. When trying to diagnose it I would get messages on the code reader to not attempt any diagnosis and do nothing about it because no trouble has been detected!! So I erase it but it lurks only to appear again.......

The code is often triggered by taking a bit too long to crank the engine or stalling it, such as might occur with a manual transmission or other type of stall. I have now gotten good at being able to trigger the code by a series of calculated stalls. Every time I have done the stalls and then looked at it on the scan tool I get the same message to not diagnose and do nothing further that no trouble is detected. THEN WHY MAKE SOMETHING THAT GENERATES THIS STUPID CODE FOR ABSOLUTELY NO REASON!!!!

Rant Over. So ignore that code.

I'll look into the other code when I get a moment....

According to my google search:

A code P0441 could mean one or more of the following has happened:
- Bad vacuum switch
- Broken or damaged EVAP line or canister
- Open in PCM purge command circuit
- Open or short in Voltage feed circuit to Purge Solenoid
- Faulty purge solenoid
- Restriction in EVAP solenoid, line or canister
- Corrosion or resistance in purge connector
- Bad PCM

Peranoid I guess lol

Thanks! Yeah, I think I will ignore the one and see if the other one comes back. I did fill up with gas again last night. Maybe that could have caused the first one. It still bothers me that a car with 25,000 miles has anything. lol the next couple hundred thousand should be worry free! I wish they would have said bring it in and we will take care of it no worries. I guess they can't really do that.

Did you ever check if your gas cap was loose? That would be the easiest to fix culprit of a CEL before you start pulling codes. Just a thought because I worked in service awhile ago, and one car that I had to drive up with that issue had that cap loose, and on the diagnostic tree, that would be the first thing to do.

Yes, I did check that and it seemed fine. Well the light came back and stayed on. They didn't see any issues and cleared the code. It makes me happy that they didn't charge me, but at the same time it bothers me. I am thinking that I should just spend the money and buy a gas cap. What do you think? If that fixes it, problem solved. I am sure if I keep going back that I will wear out my welcome. I could live with it too, but wouldn't want something else to go out and cause bigger issues.

I am so trying to ignore the code and the light, but it is so hard. I took it in and they looked at it. I also replaced the gas cap and that did nothing. They couldn't find anything wrong and cleared the code. I bought the vehicle certified and this problem started less than a week after I bought it. I don't think they are hiding anything, but I wish I could contact the previous owner. Would this kind of thing show up on the carfax report? From what I understand they really don't have to fix it for free. Of course many years of people asking me about the dumb light will not be good. It will also drive me nuts. They have always been good to work.

So, I took it for a long drive and thought I had it figured out. The light went off from 3/4 to half a tank. Yeah that didn't hold up. I filled up again and it stayed on. So I filled up again yesterday and it stayed off from full to 3/4.

Any thoughts on what I should ask them to check next?

Thank you!

This should be covered under warranty, right? If so, you can absolutely take it to them and say figure it out. That's what I'd do.
