Hi, I just bought a car (a 1990 toyota Corolla 4 door DX) at an auction that I paid 150 buks for and there were no key until I had one made so I had to judge the car just on fluids and such and it looked ok, had an oil leak but it's prolly the vlave cover and I could fix that for cheap. when I finnaly got the key made and started it I get a knocking sound when I give it gas. my dad says it's the rod broken or something and I'd have to replace the whole engine... I am unemployed and need a car bad and I thought this could be my ticket to a decent cheap car!

I'm so upset that the engine is messed up. It looks like the alternators out beause the car keeps draining the battery I'm figuring about 70 to fix the alternator, but how much would it be to fix that rod bearing? would it have messed up the crankshaft for sure? would it be cheaper to rebuild it (I know very little about cars and don't have the neccissary equipment to pull the engine out and work on it.

so bassically what I'm askking is 2 things, 1 should I have a shop rebuild it, or should I buy a whole new engine and have a shop put it in. 2 how much would both ways cost and is it even worth putting in however much it would cost to fix these problems, or should I just take out the nice stereo and speakers and sell it to a junkyard for a few bucks and cut my losses?

thanks for any help you guys can give me! Also, the body is in perfect condition, the interior needs a little work on the underdash but nothing serious and the back door handles are missing, as well as the right side mirrior.

An alternator fix is i believe more than 70 bucks. I talked to a dealer and to get it fixed there was like 200 bucks but you know, dealers always overcharge.

A rebuild is kind of expensive depending on how far you wanna go.
Buying a new one would be the better way to go for you. Since i assume you don't know much about the engine, you wouldn't really kno what parts to replace and all that. You would also need to kno how to replace the parts.

Dropping an engine, someone correct me if im wrong is realitively easy if the engine is a direct drop meaning it fits almost perfectly and you have a basic understanding of what the process is. And for tools, you could rent them.

If you sold your stereo to a junk yard, i'd say at most you'd get 20 bucks. You may be able to get more money if you ebay it, but it would take more time to find a buyer.

Well yeah obviously but I just wanted to know a ballpark figure and if it would be worth it. no clue?
And an engine should cost around 300-500 bucks.

And it depends on what you plan on doing w/ it. IF you wanna just everyday drive w/ it, you might as well use that 1000+ you use to fix it and buy a working and better car.

Just my opinion..

thx... I guess I'll just take the cd player and speakers out and sell it to a junk yard. it still runs if i charge the battery up all the way it'll run for about an hour so i could drive it there lol. I'll just drive it down to the junk yard. the body is in great shape, no dings in the windshield or anything and the interior isn't that bad. They'll gemme a few bucks for it wouldn't they? they could make a lot off the parts on it couldn't they? even like 40 or 50 bucks would be cool. plus the detachable face cd player and sony speakers should help cut my loses. Would a junnk yard buy it off me for a few bucks? I'm new to cars and I have no clue. and would I need to have the title? I bought it at a tow yard and they gave me paperwork to take to get the titale but I haven't done it, I don't wanna spend the $ to do it... if I didn't get the title and just let it get towed would that be better than getting a title I think it costs 15 dollars. and then trying to sell it to a junk yard? or do i need the title to sell it to the jy, or would the paperwork from the tow yard be enough to sell it to them? I'm poor so even a few bucks means a lot to me. cause i lost my job. any tips or guesses would be appreciated! thank you guys very much!

Most junk yards will tow it away for free or will pay you to tow it away. Use your phone book and ask how much your car is worth. But i think junkyard paying so little is stupid cause they can make so much off just mashing the body and selling tranny and engine.

Could you space your stuff out by topics. Its kind of hard to read and its kind of confusing...

yeah i can just drive it down there. What I am wondering is would I need a title for the junk yard to take it?

I bought it at a auction and haven't transfered the title. man, I'm about to just call the state and tell them someone abandoned a car in front of my house. I think the 15 days to take the paperwork to the DOL is up so i don't know what I'm gonna do... we'll see. thanks for the help guys.
