I need help

my 1989 toyota short bed deluxe 2.4 l 22re has a problem. The brake light and the battery light come on at the same time. when i rev my engine they go away. everything gets dimmer and slow down (wipers and heater) when it happens. can anyone help me? thanks in advance

Think Sears still does a 'free' charging system check and some auto parts stores will check the alt if you carry it in. That's the most likely problem (IMHO) but if your idle is so low it's a wonder the engine's running ????

If the battery, battery cables, etc. are OK, the alternator may not be putting out enough power. As a result everything is dim or slows down.

Through a test meter on the cables while it's running and see how many volts you're putting out.

If the brake and charge lights come on during revving of the engine then it's a sign that the carbon alternator brushes require replacing as this is the mileage for them to wear out. In alternators the brushes wear out on average every 140-170 000 miles where on the dashboard the brake & charge light both come on at the same time. About half of the auto electric shops in your local yellow pages sell carbon alternator brushes and copper solenoid starter contacts for about $5/pair.

Another way to verify that the alternator is not charging is while the engine is running bring a metal screwdriver or any metal object near the alternator and if the alternator is working properly then it should act like a magnet and grab the screwdriver.

Whether your starter uses two rectangular types or one rectangular and one crescent you can substitute with two squares or one square and one crescent so any of the above part #'s for those kits will be the right ones,or about half of the auto electric shops in your local yellow pages would sell aftermarket contacts for only $5 each or the pair.

AutoZone will do a free test of your alternator and battery. That's the easiest way to go if you don't have the tools yourself.

Actually, most Auto Zones have ARPS machines that they can take out to the vehicle and test the battery and the alternator still in the car. Not quite as effective as taking them inside, but still helpful.

The only problem with bringing the vehicle to the store to have it tested is that you risk getting stuck anywhere between there and your house. If the alternator isn't charging at all then your running on the battery. That will only last so long.

I would do what Sidney suggested or borrow a multimeter and see what you get.
