I've just come upon a need for a Toyota Tacoma related item.

But, I have no clue on how to make, market and patent such an item.

Can anyone give me any pointers to start to manufacture something. How can I make sure a company that I ask to make the item won't steal it from under me and make it themselves or have another company make it?

Is the first step patenting it?

or

Actually making a mock up of it?

Any input appreciated.

You can't patent an idea so you'll have to make it first (I don't know whether a prototype is enough for a patent). Check for a patent office's website and see if they can tell you what they require for you to register a patent for your item.

e.g. do they need:

- a prototype?
- a working model?
- a marketing idea?
- target audience? (not likely)
- what it's for

etc etc.

If you need help, just ask but don't tell them what it's for... just say it's a home project or something.

Good luck!

You will need a design (drawings or plan)
A concise explanation of how it works, what it does.

Look up confidentiality agreemrnt, that is what you will need the fabricator to agree to in writing.

Thank you guys. This is perfect and gives me a direction.

I have to make the thing first, because I can't patent an idea. The first big step.

So, I'm going to make it.
