Hi,

I need to get my emissions testing done and they said they can't test it if the idle is over 1200 rpm. He said it's at about 1400 rpm now. I'm looking for the idle adjustment screw/valve so I can do this myself. I seem to have misplaced my Chilton manual and I haven't been able to find any diagrams online.

I have the 4 door sedan with the 4AF engine, with fuel injection.

Can somebody tell me where the idle adjustment screw/valve is on this engine? A picture or diagram would be even better.

How much should I turn it to drop the idle down to about 900-1000 rpm?

I had a tune up done about a year ago and drive about 10 miles once a week. The tune up included timing adjustment, cap, rotor, plugs, and air filter. I could use a new fuel filter, but don't think this is raising my idle. I had a vacuum leak on my PCV valve which was repaired a couple of years back. I haven't checked for vacuum leaks since then.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

it's on the side of the throttle body, the screw face will be facing towards the sky.... if it's never been touched then:

1) there's a rubber cap over it

2) you might have a vacuum leak elsewhere as the idle (if never touched) was set at the factory.

The IAC valve could be sticking. It raises engine speed when engine is cold to keep it from stalling. To clean and or check it remove air intake and look for the large port on the throttle body. With engine (cold)and running if you put your finger over port you should feel suction. When engine is hot you should feel no suction. Can use carb cleaner in port to clean it.A faulty themostat could also be keeping the engine in a cold start mode and keeping the idle speed high
