It's called a transponder. They shouldn't need to destroy the key. Usually, you put the key inside the transponder box, then it reads the code from the key chip and then sends that code through a small wire-like antenna that goes around the ignition. The ignition recieves the signal from the transponder and it thinks that the key is in the ignition, which will then let the engine remote start.

Your installer probably had the wrong brand or model of transponder. Some transponders will not work with foreign vehicles.

I posted the following a while back

http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showpost.php?p=913611&postcount=10

The document mentioned has a programming procedure (Add Duplicate Key) for 2002+ Toyota/Lexus (page 76). I haven't tried yet so I don't know if it will work. But if you're still waiting for your dealership, you may give it a try. Let us know how it goes if so.

By the way, if you don't mind, how much your dealer charge for a blank transponder key?

Programming

We used to be able to program the transponder keys by pushing the gas and brake pedal in a sequence to get the vehicle into programming mode. Since Toyota started using seperate computers for the immobilizer system, except for the Sequoia(that I know of), you need to hook the scantool up to the vehicle to program the keys.

We have a hardware store that sells the blanks for 25$ and gives you instructions for programing for free, maybe you should check with some local locksmiths.

Unless you really need three keys, just use the Valet key for the remote starter.

what is the difference in the valet key and the others?
In most Toyota's the valet key wont unlock the glove box. Since the Tacoma doesn't have a locking glove box I'm not sure that there is much difference.
