Either replace the whole panel or reupholster it.

I'm looking at an '86 to buy and the door pannel (I think that's the correct term - the appolstry on the driver's door is kinda ripped and damaged). What, if anything can be done to fix it?

Wow you say that as though there were other options.
I would recommend reupholstering both doors so you can maintain a consistent look through out the car. And it your were thinking about a tone this would be a perfect time to do so.
