I've been reading up on on 5efe engines I have a dis style 5efe and was reading that the first gen 5efe motors have thicker rods the same ones as the 5efhe ? Is this true and if not where could you buy OEM 5efhe connecting rods and pistons ? And are they a drop in replacement in a 5efe dis engine

Well thanks for that site. I don't seem to be able to navigate, my browser I suppose. But I did find this. :

Tercel 1987-91 1456cc 3E engine
1.5L Carb. 12-valve SOHC 4 connecting rod - CRTO26 $79.25
Tercel 1990-94 1456cc 3EE engine
1.5L F.I. 12-valve SOHC 4 connecting rod - CRTO26 $79.25
Paseo 1992-95 1497cc 5EFE engine
1.5L F.I. 16-valve DOHC 4 connecting rod - CRTO26 $79.25
Tercel, Paseo 1995-98 1497cc 5EFE engine
1.5L F.I. 16-valve DOHC 4 connecting rod - CRTO26 $79.25 (95-96)
1.5L F.I. 16-valve DOHC 4 connecting rod - CRTO32 $80.60 (97-98)

So in the US, the 3e,3ee, and 5efe (first generation) all use the same rods. The second gen 5efe with no return fuel line and DIS, use a thinner rod.

I think I've seen a 5efhe rod before ... on Tercelonline ... and I thought it was different?? The best way to check, short of having one, would be to see if it is the same P/N as the others.?? But I don't know car a 5efhe came in??

Hmm maybe a Cynos, or a Corsa?? I have no idea what those are???



And that bent rod?? Well you don't know what happened there, unless it was your car?? But it takes power to bend a rod ... normally but to much timing and or lack of fuel ie poor tuning can wreck a motor in the blink of an eye! Pre-ignition, Detonation & Knock and such.

Don't blame the motor blame the tuner. A properly tuned 4efte/5efe (first gen anyway) with all stock internals can live making 300 hp, IF, tuned properly. :)

5efhe is only JDM never was here , I'm looking to get the thicker rods I want to eventually go 200 + horse power and maybe turbo it down the road and apparently I have the model with the worst rods that came in them , the difference is a thicker rods and both the first gen 5efe and 5efhe have dome shaped pistons as where mine is flat top I'm not sure if my piston will work with the 5efhe rod I'm not sure why it wouldn't though

I just want something a little bit strong don't really want to go after market forged from what I've read the 5efhe rods can handle quite a bit of abuse. Now I found some part numbers for the rods


1993-Toyota Part No.: 13201-19087

1997-Toyota Part No.: 13201-19117

1995- 5efhe-13201-19117

It seems that the later year rods are the same as the 5efhe. When I pull my engine to take it apart I'll also get an older motor and see if my rods are different between the two

Well that makes no sense?? I'm pretty sure the 97 5efe is DIS?? I have one but it's not apart ...yet. And the DIS 5efe does have the thinner rods. But if 5efe's were not DIS motors in 97 ... then never mind. :)

They were dis also but apparently after 96 they put back in stronger rods ? That's why it's kinda confusing aleast that's what someone has said in another discussion i guess I'll find out soon enough , they said dis 95-96 used weaker then 97 and up went to thicker

I have my motor torn apart and it turns out that my 95 dis engine does Infact have the same rods as the 4efte

I also have a 1995 5efe and can confirm it has the thicker rods. the 96+ has the thinner rods.
1st gen 5efe(paseo) pistons have a small dome(not as big as 5efhe) and give a slight compression increase when installed in a 2nd gen motor. the first gen cams and valve springs will swap over as well but it will only be useful if you increase the rev limit and tune for them.
