Pulling the K&N cold air intake topic from another thread - Does anyone have experience with one of these devices improving gas mileage and/or power? K&N lists a 9 horsepower gain at 4847rpms on their website at http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=57-9024 and http://www.kandn.com/dynocharts/57-9024.jpg . My goal is the improve my mileage from around 17mpg to maybe 19-20 highway on my 98 T100 3.4L 4x4. The cost is around $250 for the CAI so I please help me determine is this is wise or wasteful. Thanks.

You'll git the horsepower...but you won't see any MPG gains cause yer engine is running so high/fast.

Fer highway runs, yer gonna have to increase yer tire pressure, take yer sweet time accelerating, and keeping any extra weight out of the truck. You might want to try some AirTabs to reduce the amount of parasitic drag if yer towing something... ;)

I've got a 95 T with 3.4 and 2WD - I do have a K&N drop in - I regularly get 19 mpg in winter months and up to 21 mpg in summer. Run tires at 35-36psi. I do not think the K&N has much to do with it though. That HP increase they advertise is at wide open full throttle - you will never be running at the high rpm for anything.
