If I select the windshield vent selection, turn car off, turn back on, the vent selection is no longer windshield

if I select face for vent selection, turn car off, turn back on, face is still selected

problem is with 2018 Camry and 2020 rav4

how do I keep windshield as my selection if I select windshield before I turn the car off

you can't. if i remember correctly, in the owners manual it states that the only time the windshield defogger will come on when you start the engine or remote start the engine is when its extremely cold outside. i forgot the exact degrees. All you can do is set the air flow mode to the windshield.

Above about 45°, it turns the AC on when defogging the windshield as well, even after the car has warmed up and you can't turn the AC off. Lots of stupid "features" on these new cars because people can't be bothered to push a button.

Most of these nannies are because their owners don't know how to correctly use the features. If defog has been selected A/C should always be turned on to remove humidity. Airflow to the windshield will increase fogging in humid conditions without A/C. In the way back times American vehicles turned on the A/C compressor when defog was selected and there was no A/C button to turn on or off back then. Toyota is doing now what American manufacturers have been doing for over 50 years. Also even in really cold weather once the engine warms up the compressor will cycle on occasionally. Even when it's 10 degrees outside under the hood next to the engine it's very warm. Running the A/C also keeps the oil circulating in the system to keep everything lubricated, especially the o-rings and seals.

Also, cannot tell you how many people complain about weak air conditioning but turns out they didn't use recirculate in hot weather. To fix that they made a "Max A/C" mode that automatically turned it on. Once again, this is what American manufacturers have been doing forever, they didn't even have a recirc/fresh air selector, instead they used Max and Normal. Toyota has finally figured out what GM and Ford always knew; most people will never read the manual to learn how to correctly use the car's features so they need to make it as simple as possible.
