This is a little weird but I'm hoping one of the guys who've spent some time under a corolla can help me out. My SR5 is making a weird rattling noise, but its really hard to pinpoint what triggers it. Sometimes it does it at WOT, some times while braking, sometimes from hitting a bump. Its not very consistant, but enought to be quite annoying. Another thing is that my speedo needle is jumping while accelerating. The only thing I can think of is a loose exhaust heat shield. Anyone know where the speedo cable runs, and if its anywhere near the exhaust? Maybe the heat shield is hitting the speedo cable?

I'm going to take a better look at it now that I'm home from work.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking. It still works, just a little jumpy.

I took a closer look at it yesterday, and it sounds like the valves might be bent.:( I put a screw driver to the valve cover and there's some nasty noises in there. I'm hoping its mostly just sludge, since I'm due for an oil change. As for the rattling, maybe some stuff broke loose in the cat. Kinda has a bit of Pontiac V6 syndrome if you know what I mean  . I guess it was just a coincidence that all this stuff happened at once.

you dont have to replace your speedo cable, just open your dash and get behind your gauges and spray the end of your speedo cable down with a lil bit of wd-40
Thats usually only a temp fix, if the cable is going, wd-40 wont help. Besides wD-40 isnt that great, better choice would be gun oil. It doesnt freeze during winter.

Well you'd hear vibration through the screwdriver, which necessarily isnt anything wrong. Bent valves would have other effects than just sounds you know.... Sludge.. I'd rather take bent valves over sludge, easier to clean up :D

Ya WD40 is actually a degreaser, so I'd most likely just use penetrating oil. If I don't have to replace it I won't.

Like I said, I'm going to change the oil and then see how it is. It's pretty low, but not nearly enough to cause any problems.
