Hi,

I just purchased a corolla 200 CE.
When i turn the ignition key to the point where all lights need to be visible for few seconds.. I see that the light for Airbag is not displayed.
Also the light for the driver seat belt lights on and vanishes in few seconds. It does not check if the driver actually put the safety belt.

I asked few of my friends who know about cars - they told me it could be specific to this model and could be a feature that
i) airbag light turns on only if there is an issue
ii) Seat belt would not be checking further.

Can somebody please advise me what could be the damages for getting this repaired?

airbag lights only come on when you need to fix them.

seat belt lights should stay on till you buckle your seatbelt.
Correction:

Airbag light come on for a few seconds when you turn your key to ACC or ON. Then turn off if everything is OK. Of course it stays on or keep blinking when you need to fix them.

Seat belt light should BLINK till you buckle your seathelt.

I think i know the problem now -
when in ACC mode

1) The seat belt comes ON for a moment and then closes by itself.
2) The Airbag light does never turned On.

The desired behaviours should be -
1) The seatbelt should flash till the driver wears the seat belt.
2) The Airbag light should blink for 6 seconds and then stop.

I guess i will have to take to a dealer? any options?

You're looking at an electrical problem here. Most likely switched or shorted wire. Mind you the seatbelt light should only come on with key in "on" position. It's gonna be a long troubleshooting session. If you have the time and the wiring book, go for it, otherwise get a shop.

If you still wanna try it, post back and tell us which year (2000? 2001? 2002?) your car is.

Here's what my '98 does.

All tests are done with the door closed and the key removed.

LOCK to ACC: Airbag light turns on for about 5 seconds then goes out.

LOCK to ON: Airbag light turns on for about 5 seconds then goes out. Oil, Battery, and CHECK stay on. Seatbelt blinks until seatbelt strap is pulled a good bit. (Notice it doesn't go out when it's clicked meaning the sensor/switch is in the side pillar.)

LOCK to START: Same lights as above but they just blink on then off except the seatbelt light. That stays blinking until seatbelt strap is pulled a good bit.

One thing you can try is re-seating connections on the instrument panel (easy to do) and the computer (not as easy to do).
