The 03 pre runner I owned has no slip dif but it had the rear diff lock to help you get unstuck. The button is on the left hand side of the steering wheel says RR dif lock on it.
But according to the owners manual could only be used at speeds of under 5 mile per hour. I tried it above once and it started flashing (which means something is wrong).

hope this helps

No Tacoma came from the factory with a limited slip differential during the 2001 - 2004 generation. As Lance indicated, the only factory traction gadget was the locker available with the TRD Off Road Package.

Why only under 5mph? will it damage the gears?
is 5mph a suggestion, or a rule? because if you cant use it over 5mph, that makes it kind of useless for just being able to lock em in and run like hell offroad.... is the electronic locker on the trd package just intended as a last chance get out of rut free card?

It is a safty feature in the system. They don't want you to lock it in rolling down the road and blow the rear end. It can be disabled by doing the gray wire mod.

it can affect handling because both wheels are powered, which increases tire wear and changes how the vehicle handles.

my dif light always blinks when on, even if im at a standstill.
but if i wanted to engage the lockers and go say..... 15mph, it wouldnt damage them, right?
