This is for 2000 CE model.

Lug nut size:

I am aware that the official size is 21mm. However, I get a perfect fit with 13/16" deep socket from Craftsman. It's tight and grabs it well. 21mm on the other hand is sloppy. It is a generic brand impact socket. The tool that came with the vehicle is also sloppy. Not unacceptably sloppy but not perfect fit like 13/16.

I don't know if the lug nuts are original but see no indication they got replaced.

etc,

You can use whatever fits. Snug is actually better in my book. I would stick with a 6 pointed socket to prevent rounding of the corners of the hex.

Toysrme,

As far as I can remember (and I am on my 4th Camry; 86, 94, 98 and 07) they have always been 21MM. I have seen 19MM (or 3/4) used on some American cars and some 17MM used on aftermarket wheels.

mike, are you sure? Coz my 98 has a 19mm, if I can remember correctly. Have to check though.

My 98 Camry had 21MM. I am sure. I say had, since that car was totaled. Maybe the cars with alloy wheels have 21MM, since all my cars had/have alloys.

13/16" = 0.8125
21mm = 0.8267716527
20mm = 0.787401574
19mm = 0.7480314953

I doubt they're 21mm. Probably 19/20mm like 99% of import cars.

Let me go back and check, coz I just bought a set of sockets that goes only till 19mm. Darn it............. I might need to return the set if the lugs are 21mm.

Come to think of it, I have worked on my father-in-laws 01 LE with steel wheels and they were 21MM too. You better go return those new sockets.

I thought I'd add to this discussion since I ran into this thread when researching for the appropriate socket for my 94 Celica ST with my new impact wrench. I bought a 21 mm socket and it worked out just fine, there was a little play in it but it didn't bother me, as the slight play to me gave my impact wrench some momentum to spin up, i.e., add more impact to the impact. I bought a 13/16" socket for my other vehicle, so since I saw this discussion I thought I'd try the 13/16" on my Celica, and it was very snug on my lug nuts. Not sure I'd be comfortable using it with my impact wrench because there is no play whatsoever, and in fact too tight on some of my other lug nuts on the same wheel. I also wouldn't use a 19 mm, I doubt that would even fit since it's smaller than a 13/16" socket. 21 mm is the way to go IMO for what it's worth.

As stated the factory spec is 21mm, both on alloy wheels and steel wheels

This thread is ancient; from 2007. But for the record, the OP's mention of using a 13/16" socket on a 21mm lug bolt is correct. 13/16" = 20.64mm, so it'll be snug on a 21mm hex, but it should work fine. Maybe better.
