maintenance question

Hello everyone, I have a 2009 XRS Corolla... My question, well my frustration is that I have 4,577 miles on the Corolla and the "Maint Reqd" light just started blinking as soon as I turn the car on every time. Now do I wait till I hit the 5,000 miles, or do I go ahead and do the maintenance on the Corolla ASAP?? Any help will be appreciated. Thankx

Have you had your oil change yet?

Your service is due. The light is a reminder (or a "bug") to service your vehicle soon, which is whenever you want it to be done. Usually, I would wait until the car is serviced before you reset the light, in which they would do it for you (usually a Toyota dealer).

There is nothing like reading the ownwer manual, its all explained ;)

The Maintanance req'd light is a reminder that you need to have service performed.

You are thinking of the Check Engine Light.

There is another forum on this in this section not that far down, I don't know the link off by hand....

We don't have the "maintance" light on our canadian cars, the poster below you is correct. You're thinking of the CEL (Check Engine Light) that comes on when something has gone wrong with the vehicle, example when your MAF (Mass Air Flow) goes (which happened on my previous car) or the odd time if you get bad gas the light will come on and then go off after the gas is gone....

for the OP this is just your "take your car in for regular maintence" light. My mom's Mercury cougar has this and I had the car for a month on my own once and couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was till I looked it up. I thought something was wrong as well....
If you have your oil changed, instead of going and looking for the other forum, although i suggest it as it has more info, to reset your light all you have to do is turn the car to accessory, put it on Trip A, turn the car off, hold the button in, and turn the car back on. It should reset with 0000 and it should turn the light off.... I could be wrong in reciting that (again check other forum) it should also be in your owners manual! or take it to the dealer they may be able to tell you if you can't find it

RTFM lol

But seriously, my trix does the same thing, when you get to like 4500 miles (since last oil change and reset) the light flashes on at start up then goes off. When you get to like 4900 (since last oil change) the light stays on until you do the oil change and reset.

In the manual it describes how to reset the maint reminder.

With ignition on turn to trip A, turn off ignition, then while holding the trip reset button, turn the ignition back on, then you will see the digits flash off ------- in the trip meter. Thats it. IIRC it's only on US models.

+1. It's a good read.

Are you talking about when you first turn the key to ACC and all the lights on the dash turn on to check? At first I thought OP was talking about this when he said
the "Maint Reqd" light just started blinking as soon as I turn the car on every time
I thought the light would stay on like any other warning/notification system (i.e. TPS).
Yes at around 4500 miles, the 'maint req' light flashes on for a few seconds on every start up longer than the normal checks, then the closer you get to 5000 miles instead of flashing and staying off, it flashes and stays on.
Whether or not you do scheduled maintenace, i.e. oil & filter change, that "maint required light" is just a reminder. If the light is bothersome, all anyone has to do is go through the reset procedure as outlined in your owners manual to turn it off! Like a pesky fly you keep it at bay or squash it!
I don't think the servicing is due. maybe a fault. You should back to the dealer to check since your car is still under warranty
that's misinfo...his light is on because his service interval is coming up.

Your car is made in Asia.
US Corolla is different and have this feature. Canadian Corollas do not have it even though some US ones ere built in Canada.

I see, thanks for clearing that up.
