Making a key by VIN at dealer

I have a question. I lost my key, and it was the only one i had.
Anyone knows how much it cost at dealers to make one out of vin number???

I had a new key made for my old Celica when I still had it, but that was a copy made from the key I still had. Only cost around $14 (Toyota key blank + actual key production) Price probably varies from dealer to dealer. If they were to make one from scratch depending on the VIN...I'd give your local dealer a call about it.

I thought it supports to be free??? You only have to give them the vin number + verification of ownership. I did it couple times, and always have it for free.

it's never free...

it cost them some $$ for the materials and their time/labor

I personally happened to lock my key in my car while at the stealership and they wanted to charge me 40.00 for a new key that would start my enginge. They will probably want the silver dogtag that comes with the key to make you a duplicate. (thats what they asked me for)

pull the drivers side door panel off and get the key code formt he door lock. For them to do it with the VIN they will not have it on file more than likely adn they have to pay to get the code. IF you ahve the key code you can jsut give them that and they can cut it from that. You may even be able to find a good locksmith that can cut it from the key code once you ahve it.

I know the locksmith that did work for us when I was welling used cars had to pay somewhere between 25-50 dollars on average to get key codes using the VIn. This depended on the make model and year of the car. MB and BMW and others like that were even more.

Why someone would have only 1 key to their car baffles me.. I carry 2 keys with me all the time for ALL my cars, copies are cheap at Walmart, $1.77 CDN (like what.. $1.30 US?). They come in handy when you lock your keys in the car.. hmmm.. $40 for towtruck to open the doors, waste 30mins to 1hr trying to open the lock with a coathanger in -20C weather, or carry second key in pockets to the cost of $1.77 each. Tough choice.

My local toyota dealer said they don't make keys for cars over 10 years old....wtf?

Key's vary in price...and yes they can be cut from the dealership, using only the vin. They are being pricks if they charge you extra to look up the code, but it also depends on the year, make and model of the car. (sometimes a car will be too old for the dealership to have on record...try finding somewhere to cut a key for a '77 celi, not gonna happen, lol)

Newer cars have special keys which have to be programmed, and have special computer chips in them (key alone is $80, plus usually 1 hour labour).

Older models usually just have a plain key, and some dealerships will just charge you for the key becuz there is no labour involved (except from the parts guy to cut it and make sure it works) However there are new key cutting machines, which the dealership then may add more to pay for the machine. (all figures in CAD) $40 on just a regular key to be cut is rediculous. $20 not so bad...key should only cost $5-10 tho. $40 on a new car key with chip, is an awesome price.

I've seen a customer buy a brand new vehicle, and want an extra key for it, about $180 later they got their key...I've also watched the process to programming a key and it's a pain in the ass...so it's a lose lose situation...my advice...don't buy a new car when you need more than the two keys it comes with, lol!!

Keys get lost, ie change of owners. Also copies don't always work right especially if they're made from a worn out key. I went to 3 different dealers and had about 6 keys made before they finally made one that fit my relative's Honda Accord. They were the keys with embedded chips too, so it was bad that so many keys got wasted since I was trying to make a duplicate key from a worn out key. One dealership finally decided to make one from the VIN and I got a working duplicate key.

what kind of system you have also affects the cost:
1. simple key would cost you 14-24 bucks
2. key with chip will cost you more for a. key itself b. programming

Ok i went to the local dealer, took them 10min to find a code and cut the key. And it only came to a 8$ total. I know i need an extra spare key but w/e, i will make one now.

local dealer cut a key for me for free .. then again, it was a $60 chrome nismo key i got as a gift

Thanks a lot for a quick response , local dealers refuse any service to imported cars , we have cars imported from USA , Japan and uk . We do not have advanced locksmiths around , locksmiths around can only cut flat old keys of the 90's , none can cut sidewinders etc

Being in a foreign country from the US viewpoint.

You can get blank transponder (chip) key from ebay.

Have the local locksmith cut it for you.

You can also find the programming instruction with google.
