Hey guys. I've heard rumors that a K&N air filter will cause the mass air sensor to get dirty really quick. Is that true?
Also, where exactly is that darn mass air sensor and how do you clean it? I've searched around for posts and cant really find much about it. My engine is the 2.7 3rz Thanks!

Yeah I recently found out on this site that a K+N will definately jack up your MAF sensor, but it's due to overoiling. What I understand is that the oil gets on the MAF sensor which allows dirt to stick all over it. So, if you're gonna get a K+N make sure you take it easy on the oil. It's not worth the risk to me, and there are plenty of aftermarket air filters out there that don't require oiling.

I took it out and it wasn't that dirty but used some electrical component cleaner on it anyway. I also cleaned my K&N and ended up with like 10lbs of sand in the sink ;). It was pretty dirty. Thanks for the advise about not overoiling it. Sounds like something I would do.

K&N has a page on their site refuting the claims of the MAF getting gummed up. They claim that even with over-oiling, the air flows through the filter so slowly that the sendor won't get fouled. DON"T YOU BELIEVE IT. I've got the K&N filter/intake kit on my '99 V6 and the sensor gets fouled shortly after the filter is reoiled - regardless of the amount of oil I put on the filter. I have just resigned myself to the idea of cleaning the MAF a couple of weeks after the filter is cleaned. My reminder? Simple - the check engine light comes on, with a code indicating System Too Lean - Bank 1.
