I'm might move up to a bigger vehicle and I'm looking at a 19 highlander V6. Seems like most of the issues have been ironed out in the 19 (8speed and such), but i saw a few random reports of perfume or heavy fragrance types smells coming from the AC (not mildew). Has anyone had that type of issue? I'm the type of person that like my car to smell like NOTHING. On that note, did anyone find the new car smell excessive in the cloth interior?

Any good reason not to buy this thing? Just looking for a good reliable person and stuff hauler.

Thanks!

I have the LE Plus, cloth...no out gassing smell from fabric.

Regarding the smell from the A/C, I wonder if its the cabin filter? When I took mine in for the 10K service, the filter is to be replaced for free. My wife's 2017 Corolla has the same cabin filter, so I swapped them out to get her a new one.

Much to my surprise they list 2 different cabin filters available, 1 is listed as a "deodorant type" the other "pollen type". Mine was the deodorant type which was heaver and had a thin Grey liner in the slats, her Corolla is the pollen type which is the normal White basic filter...wonder if that's what others have complained about? I am very sensitive to smells and the deodorant type in mine didn't bother me.

See item 5, in the parts list.

Depending on what you are moving up from you may find yourself second guessing your choice. We purchased a '17 XLE-AWD new in 17' and find it is quite a decent vehicle. But, out of seven Toyota's (Starting in the early 60's) It is easily the noisiest-creakiest of them all. However, it is better than Subaru's and Hyundai's that we checked out. In 11,000 miles there haven't been any show stoppers except for the windshield spontaneously cracking right in the middle, traveling upwards about 4 inches and then veering left. At 1400 Miles! Toyota eventually stood up and replaced it 'On Them.' The stop/start feature is a daily irritant but I have figured out the quickest way to strangle it. Mileage is decent but not amazing, and the tires look like they will wear forever. Overall, I'm just saying to find the one you want and drive it like you're renting it. Many people have wind noise complaints and some find that the body creaks and squawks more than it should. Supposedly a major redesign is coming but don't hold your breath.

I know that..and I wasn't questioning the cost. What I was questioning was the fact it was free.
Hi Mike, actually you get 2 free.
(1) at 10K or 12 months (1) at 20K or 24 months...per the Toyota Care Highlander card they sent me.

My wife's Corolla does not offer this same benefit though, weird.

I have a new 2019...platinum package.
I wish I would have known that there isn't a digital speedometer. There is an analog one. I fixed this by buying a USB plug & play digital speedometer that I have "installed" (the bottom has a non-adhesive sticky pad) near the center dash speaker. It has a heads-up display on the windshield.

FWIW, The cabin filter is the same in both our HLs (2nd gen & 3rd gen) and my father's 2011 Avalon.
I buy them from Amazon by searching for CF10285. I have had no strange smells.
Both my HLs are quiet and solid. No creaks or squeaks. One has 71k miles and the other 69k.
