When I did mine last week I had a few shavings attached to the plug. Nothing quite that big, but still good size (one was close to half an inch.)

What surprised me was the 'gunk' that collected in that channel around the magnet. That had to have very fine pieces of metal in it because I had a hell of a time getting it to separate from the plug....

Don't worry about it, it's a left-over cutting from when the housing was machined or the holes tapped. I specialize in gears at my job, and it's not uncommon. (not to sure about in tacomas though) A failure in the diff won't create that sort of peice anyway, at least not without a lot of other metal flakes / chunks. "Fuzz" on the magnet plug is normal too.

Yep, when I did mine the plug had the "Fuzz" and a thick metal like paste all over the magnet.

Mine just had a tiny bit of fuzz and a few tiny shavings on the magnet. BUT when I let off the gas at any speed it sounds like a card in the bicycle spokes! I put Royal Purple in the rear end but it's still noisy. Time for an ass end?

Not a LSD, the good news is tomorrow I pick up a complete axle, drum to drum with springs! $350. with 65k on it and it's a V-6 auto too. I might even stack the springs into a 4 pack. Life just got better. I added the R/P 75/90 to quiet the "tick" but no luck.

Did you check your u-joints? With only a couple tiny metal chunks on the drain plug magnet, you might be barking up the wrong tree. Not a bad deal on the axle though.
