MKII Supra SCCA Road Racing In-Car Video Footage

4932 Views 22 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  WebbRacing.com
I finally got around to uploading some of my old in-car racing videos, and among them are a few from the cockpit of my first road racing car - a 1984 Toyota Supra. The car competed in the SCCA's Improved Touring S category with me behind the wheel in 1992 and 1993. It took me to two championships in '92, with support from Toyo Tires, HKS, Technosquare (then America HMR), Toysport, Toyota Motorsports, St. Andre's, etc. My main competitors in this class were the Datsun 240Z/260Z/280Z, 1st Gen Mazda RX-7 13B, 2nd Gen RX-7 and Porsche 944.

I thought some of you might enjoy seeing an MKII in action! Let me know what you think.

Very cool. Thanks for the footage! I have seen very few who made a genuine effort and tracked their supras over the years. We have someone locally that has picked up an 82 (I believe) that was ITS prepared and run here, but that's the first I've seen of one heading around the circuit! I take it you've moved on from the supra since the vids were taken?

Bob
Yeah, I sold the Supra in late '93 and bought an SCCA Spec Racer. I ran it for a year or two as a Renault and then converted it to a Ford. After that, I had a Spec Miata for a few seasons. Now I drive for an endurance team that runs a 1998 RX-7.
that is some neat stuff
wow, very cool "old school" stuff that I've never seen. Thanks.
Scott;

those are the hottest MK2 Video's I've seen ever; thank you so much for sharing. What other information can you tell us about the car: mods; suspension etc. Do you have any other pictures; some high resolution shots would be absolutely amazing. What about the car? Where is it now; does it still compete at all or has she been retired.

Thanks again for sharing this piece of history with us

Thanks for the positive comments! I believe the car is still in Southern California, but it is no longer being raced. I'll contact the current owner and see if there is any more news.

When I owned the car, it was equipped as follows (that I can recall):

Autopower Roll Cage
TRD Springs, Shocks & Anti-roll Bars
TRD Limited Slip Differential
TRD Header
TRD Plug Wires
TRD Clutch
HKS Power Flow Air Filter
HKS Twin Power Ignition
HKS Spark Plugs
SuperTrapp Muffler
Technosquare/America HMR Built Engine
Momo Steering Wheel
??? Racing Seat
??? 15" Wheels
Toyo Proxes RA-1 Tires
??? Front Strut Tower Bar
??? Front Camber Plates

Here's a link to a couple of more photos:

I don't seem to have any high-res images - just some prints (it was '92 and '93 after all!).

That would be so awesome if you could find out if the car is still around. As Bob mentioned we have a local member of our club who 'inherited' such a vehicle and it's such a beautiful piece of history. It would be a shame if these cars were just lost and forgotten.

BTW...those pictures give me goosebumps!!
Gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous. :) Thanks for posting those!
I hope you don't mind, I thought this was so cool and rare that I posted it at supraforums.com in the road race section. It was quite well received and appreciated. Thanks.

No problem at all - that's great! I should have thought of that myself. I'll have to check in over there too.
Supra Victory

I thought I'd upload one of the victories from '92 as well. In this one I had a quick fight with a 240Z at the beginning of the race, only to watch him drive straight off the track in Turn 2. I fell off the pavement in the same turn a few laps later when another competitor lost a radiator in front of me. So many cars left the track and spun it caused a full-course yellow. After the restart I had a bit of fun following a Mustang through lapped traffic.

I also tried to post on SupraForums.com, but the administrator has turned off new registrations - so I can't.
Scott,
wow, you were boogying right along in that one. Was that an older Celica you passed near the end?

I know the registration at SF is on hold/limbo ...I have no idea on that stuff. But I'll post your update there since I'm sure there is always a lot of interest in these great historic pics/stories/achievements. Thanks.

PS: one of the mods at SF asked "What is his account name?" so he might be able to do the required magic. Let me know. I told him your s/n here.
Just added the oval track race from Phoenix International Raceway. The trusty Supra was on pole and won the race.

The last car I passed (black/silver) was a Dodge Shelby Charger. Funny enough, it was my old street car that I'd sold to a race team the previous year.
Wow, one of the greatest Mk2 vids ever! And that has got to be the highest reving NA 5m I've ever heard. How high was it reving? How much head work?
THanks.

Actually, I didn't take revs past the factory redline often. I can't even recall what that is. As for the head, by the specifications of the rules, we were only able to match port the manifolds up to 1", if memory serves me correctly.

Scott,
a couple of the mods and several members at Supraforums, in the roadrace section, asked if I can find out under what name you tried to register so they can help expedite your registration there. If you don't mind posting it here or PM'ing it to me, we'd enjoy your experienced input in that forum.

You might know/remember James R. over there at SF, I think he still works for Forgeline/Dave Schardt. Here is what he posted there:

Scott Webb is an excellent racer. Helped me a lot with setting up my 85 mkii back in the day. Sent me the VHS with tons of hours of in car vids.

Just a correction on the car setup. I remember him telling me it was 14" wheels due to the ITS regs.

He ran the prototype HKS Air Charger Kit for the mk2.

Chris: If you can help him get registered, I think he could add a lot to the forum esp the road race section.
