I am taking a trip from chicago to LA in a couple months and am thinking about hauling a 300lb ATV in the bed. What kind of MPG drop can I expect?

It would probably help to post some specs on your truck (i.e. Engine size, Prerunner/4x4, RC/AC/DC, lift/tire size, etc....)

I drove from western Washington (State) to Clovis, CA before Xmas and got about 18mpg. On the way back I had close to 400lbs of firewood and other stuff and got between 15.5 and 16.5. Almost the whole way was on I-5 and I drive fast.

Aside from the fact the *winter gas mix* will give you poor gas mileage to begin with....

I've been running around with 210lbs of sand in my bed all winter and I've been getting about 15mpg (4.0, auto, access cab).

This past summer - same driving conditions, summer gas, and nothing in my bed - I was getting 18mpg.
