MPG question. Need help

Ok I currently own a 2005 Camry XLE V6 for about a month now and I noticed the MPG arent as good as expected for the V6. I was just wondering what people are getting with the 4 cylinder? If need be I will be selling my XLE for a Toyota with the 4. I know power is much better with the 6 but I was curious about the 4 . any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Check out fueleconomy.org. Their new estimates (not the original EPA) are pretty accurate.
I have a 1996 w/ 2.2L and the last time I calculated it was 29 and that included plenty of time sitting in Chicago traffic. It's normally high 20s/low 30s with a mix of hwy and city driving. Much better than my last car which had a V6.
I dont see how people can be averaging around 30MPG during the winter, unless they do 90% highway driving. I usually get between 21-22MPG during the winter, and I get 24-26MPG in the summer.
We have a 2005 Camry LE 4 cyl, bought new in November 2004. We keep records on each tank of gas, and the car has averaged 30.3 mpg since we have owned it. The range is from a high of 38 mpg on two different tanks of gas, to a low of 22.3 mpg on one tank of gas. Driving conditions and style make a huge amount of difference.
Something is wrong

Ok I have the 2005 XLE with V6 and Im getting about 270 miles to the tank, If I calculate it correctly 270 miles divided by 17.5 gallons of gas = 15.42 MPG. How in the Hell is that? Something dont seem right. I dont have a lead foot by any means.

Are you calculating that based on the capacity of the gas tank, or is that how much fuel you used since you last filled up according to the pump?
Gallons it took to fill up

I based it on resetting the trip odometer to 0 when I fill the tank then waiting for the tank to run down to the low fuel light with about 20 miles left on the tank then basing how many miles are on the trip odometer divided by how many gallons to fill up. An example would be 270 miles on trip odometer filling up the tank with 17.5 gallons of gas. 270 miles divided by 17.5 gallons of gas = 15.4 Is this right?

Thats how I do it, 17.5 gallons just seemed like a lot since that would mean you would only have ~15 miles before you ran your tank completely empty. If I fill up when the guage is right below the "E" mark, I can usually get in about 16 gallons.
Yor right

Im sorry I did get 270 miles with 16 gallons not 17.5. Thats still not good though? How much are you getting and do you have a 6 cyl? thanks, Chuck
here's something disturbing, I was actually going to make a thread about this, my 4cyl is averaging 16mpg now.

Recently I've been doing a lot of driving, almost entirely highway(60-80mph) and been sucking gas like a suburban and my car is recently tuned and sounds great.

I drove 620mi last week and used an incredible $120(37gal.) worth reg grade fuel. Cant even blame the fuel, I got gas at a different station every time. Personally I feel now, that the engine is just underpowered. idk
Does winter blend effect mpg?

That still is quite low. I have the 3.5L V6 and heres a graph of my recent gas mileage:

So what do I do. I know if I take it to the dealer they are going to say nothing is wrong and Its my driving habits which is Bull.
Anyone have suggestions

Im open for anything. I have a Brand New Air filter, No check engine light and nothing out of the ordinary. I'd like to bring it in to the dealer but I know the game. They are going to blame my driving habits which is not the case. Anyone else come across this problem and have the dealer make any repairs?
Here is what my Haynes manual says about "excessive fuel consumption".

1. Dirty or clogged air filter element
2. Incorrectly set ignition timing
3. Emission system is not functioning properly
4. Fuel injection system not functioning properly
5. Low tire pressure or incorrect tire size

You ruled out 1. Check 5, because it is easy. Also checking 2 only takes a $50 timing light (but I doubt it is the problem, because unless the timing is way off, the computer corrects it - and if it is way off, the car wouldn't run fine). The tests for 3 are easy, you only need hand tools, although some of them may be relatively expensive. You could try to replace the oxygen sensor without testing it, because it is cheap. I have no experience about 4.

Also, make sure that
1. the transmission is not slipping and the lockup works (try to feel it with your butt)
2. the brakes are not binding
3. the engine has enough power (check compression in cylinders).

Try to measure MPG on highway at 55 or 60 MPH with cruise control over at least 100 miles. You should get around 30 MPG. Whatever the result is, that would give more information.

I am big on tarbasd's #3.

The ECM has several "default" settings that it uses if any of several sensors go bad (though I think it throws a CEL code and flashes the light. Maybe have a free code scan at one of the local auto parts stores). If a sensor is not sending a correct signal to the ECM the ECM will force the engine to run improperly.

I have a little sheet I setup for myself on xcel and it tracks the average of everything. dunno if you guys want it, but looking at it over the past few days. I average about 17.2 -- I believe it has to do with driving habits and where you drive.

I drive mostly city, so i should see about 17-18 mpg and if I drive a lot of freeway I should see some type of improvement. since I've modded my car and it is a larger wheel, that has to be taken into effect. Have you swapped wheels out? etc etc?

You guys can kind of track if you guys want to, everything's setup there's just 2 notes where you have to increase the formula value every time you put a record into the xcel

I was thinking of getting a performance air filter and see if that'll help.

Thanks

Im glad to see its not just me. I drive 10 miles expressway to work then 10 miles back, everthing after that is city driving. Its just hard to belieive that people on fueleconomy.org are getting 30-32 city. I cant see how. All im getting is 17.5 at best combined. Im not sure if setting up an appt with the dealer will do any good with no engine light and car running fine.
