As the Supra, Celica, and MR-S (MR2) progressively disappeared over the last decade, so too did the excitement from Toyota's lineup. But sports cars are back in the Japanese giant's product plan, led by the Lexus LFA and the new Scion FR-S, which is just about to hit showroom floors. And now it appears the green lamp is finally about to be lit on a long-awaited Supra successor.

Several years ago, Toyota's U.S.-based product planners pitched a new hybrid sports car with looks, power, and environmental credentials. Unveiled at the 2007 Detroit auto show as the FT-HS, the concept reportedly pointed the way toward a reinterpretation of the Supra.

The financial crisis of 2008 prevented the FT-HS from becoming anything more than an attractive concept. But the spirit of that coupe survived and is reportedly being channeled into the design of the on-again, off-again, on-again Supra project. The edges and sharp angles you see in the attached illustration at top are how one artist interprets the direction Toyota is believed to be heading with its new sports car.

The car's final body is expected to be dropped onto the chassis of the GRMN MRS prototype, which has already undergone testing at Fuji Speedway. GRMN stands for Gazoo Racing Meister of Nurburgring, and was named after Nurburgring expert Hiromu Naruse, Toyota's late godfather of sports car development.

Unlike the rear-drive FT-HS, the new sports coupe (it's unlikely to be called Supra) would employ an all-wheel-drive system and generate upwards of 400 horsepower. The car is rumored to feature a mid-engine-mounted, 3.5-liter V-6 hybrid setup mated to a CVT lifted from the new Lexus RX, but tuned for higher performance. The engine would drive the rear wheels, while in-wheel electric motors would power the fronts. GRMN's expertise would be utilized to help develop the car.

The million-dollar question is when we'll see it in production. It's no secret that company CEO Akio Toyoda -- weekend racer, sports car addict, and the driving force behind bringing the extravagantly priced LFA to market -- is enthusiastic about a Supra successor. Toyota bosses haven't officially approved the project, but if Toyoda has his way and the economy shows continued signs of recovery, the new coupe could be on showroom floors by late 2015 for less than $60,000.

It would be a failure, if they take that route. A disastrous idea to use V6 + hybrid in such a high performance car.

I doubt any of that is true. Toyota tends to err on the side of conservative when it comes to designs. That is simply horrendous looking.

This was my favourite rendering of a Supra concept to date:

I would like to see it powered by a beefed up version of the IS-F V8 running a 6 or 7 speed manual transmission with a dual clutch automated manual as an option.

x 2

The tuned IS-F engine used in Orido Manabu's GT-86 with 6 speed manual (and close to 8000 rpm redline) would be the ideal engine putting out 500 + HP. It has a lot of potential with that Yamaha head on it.

I bet you don't see anything V8 powered come out of it. A V6 with direct injection maybe.

Either way it would be cool to see a Celica / Supra lineup again.

Agreed. Its usually not the Japanese way to put a V8 in such a car. Exception would be the luxury division but even then. V6's can produce just as much power as V8's can to a certain extent. Sure V8's sound nicer and I'd take one.

Well this time around it might happen. The CEO is a car enthusiast and I know he wants these kinds of cars in the stable. So maybe we'll see a Supra, Celica and MR2 resurrection in some shape or form. Cause in NA technically there is no Toyota sports car cause obviously its being sold as a Scion. Well Toyota badged.

And if nothing else, yet another "Supra is comming back" thread will generate a few extra page views for TN.

Aside from this comment, I choose to abstain from this thread until there is more than just a whisper.

Just out of curiosity, has their been an AWD midship vehicle? I assume there were weight or cost concerns along with performance and handling but if it were to be a hybrid, what if you stuck the battery ahead of the firewall, under the hood and the engine behind the cabin, midship and use the engine to drive the rear wheels and the elec. motors to drive the front? You won't need the driveshaft because of this setup.

A rumor is just a rumor. With all that Toyota has been doing lately, I doubt they would give it an AWD V6 hybrid powertrain. I hope and pray we get a twin-turbo I6, but that is probably wishful thinking. An IS-F V8 would be pretty damn good ;)

That is ugly! Looks like a very angry bug. It makes me a bit sad to think that if the Supra does make a come back, it will not have an I6. But times change I guess. Maybe they could have a direct inject v6, with FI or major output, for the RWD Supra, and a hybrid I4 for the Celica. Building off the two cars off the same platform would make it much easier to introduce the cars back into the market, at least in my head. But that's a scary place, and I don't visit there much.

Ofcourse, so many of those. R8 V8, R8 V10, Lamborghini Gallardo (except LP550-2 flavor), Lamborghini Aventador, Maclaren MP4-12 C (Just saw a metallic orange Maclaren MP4 today in Calgary. Most of the people around me were confusing it with a Lotus Evora until I showed them rear end LOL Looks too generic for my taste) and the list goes on.

but isin't that the new NSX? Mid mounted V6 with Hybrid?
Who said it would be a success?? Just wait and see. The only hybrid that can pull it off right now is the Porsche 918, which will be successful because it starts off with a race V8 engine and then adds a hybrid on top of it.

Phew! Thank god guys! I was getting worried there for awhile! I hadn't seen the quarterly "Toyota to bring back the Supra" thread in awhile and was starting to freak. Carry on.

Sounds like you are predicting the future... or trying to.

But if Porsche can get it right and Ferrari will also use this idea for the next super car. The fomula of a mid engined hybrid can work. Plus this is Toyota we are talking about... where Hybrid has been their niche.

Now whether this "SUPRA" will ever come... I think.. that's probably less likely.. Until I see it in the showrooms.. I won't believe there will be another "supra"... lol
