My 4x4 truck's gas gauge doesn't work

My 4x4 truck's gas gauge doesn't work. It sat for about 6-8 months before I put in a rebuilt engine.How does the gas gauge read the amount of gas in the tank? Does it have a float? Could it be stuck? If so, anybody know how to fix it???? :confused:
