My BFG AT balancing story (be warned, it's long)

This is kinda long, so pls. skip if you are not interested in balancing issues …. :D

I purchased new wheels with tires (BFG AT 265/75-R16) about two weeks ago and also put on 5100’s in the front at 1.75”.
At first, everything seemed fine. Then I read about the “humm” here:
http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showthread.php?t=220615&highlight=5100+noise+vibration
I watched out for it, and sure enough, I got it as well (very, very minor, though). But that’s another story. Here is my rant about balancing the BFG’s:
After they were first installed, everything was fine for a few days until I took a longer trip on the interstate. I started to notice vibrations starting at about 55mph, incl. steering wheel shake. So I went back to Discount Tire. They re-balanced all 4 wheels, which improved the steering wheel shake a lot, but did nothing to the overall vibration (which now I guess comes mainly from the rear). A couple days later I went back and a guy from DT takes a test drive. He agrees with vibes from the rear, so they re-balance both rear tires. The first thing they note is that both were off quite a bit. (WTF, they were just balanced two days before?). Then, when tire one is on the balancer, they notice a wobble. So that tire is replaced with a new one. Unfortunately, there is no improvement; still a lot of overall vibrations with a little bit of steering wheel shake.
So now I’ve decided to go to a different DT store in the next town. Went there today, as they have a new balancer (Hunter 9200 I believe, no road force unfortunately). The guys seem on top of it in that store. But they tell me that they have seen a lot of problems with Tacomas and balancing. So they give it a shot. One tech re-balances the two front tires, and then tells another one to replace the two in the rear as they required 13+ ounces of weight. The other tech installs two new tires, but that guy seemed not quite as experienced. Later I leave, and now the steering wheel shake is completely gone, no shake at all. Great, right? Not so fast! How about the rear? Still the same. So I go back, and now the first tech looks at both rear wheels. Again replaces one with a new tire (that one needed 10 ounces), but leaves the other one (6 ounces). Now the vibration is quite a bit better, but far from gone.
I am a little frustrated at the moment after 4 balancing attempts. Next step will be tomorrow: DT #3, even further away, but they have a Hunter 9700 (road force). This really is my last hope.
I have got to say that the guys at Discount Tire have been very helpful, and everybody is trying. It just hasn’t worked out yet. Maybe it’s one (or more) of the wheels? I will hopefully find out tomorrow.

Done with my rant now, but I just had to vent!!!!

UPDATE one day later: Went to the next Discount Tire, the one with the Hunter 9700 road force machine. Had all 4 wheels road force balanced. The first three were fine with "heavy spots" between 5 and 15 lbs, which is ok according to the tech. Then comes number 4, the left rear wheel. The balancer says "out of spec range". Again, according to the tech, that happens when there is a heavy spot of more than 60lbs. So the machine instructs the teck to rotate the tire on the rim what I would say about 140 degrees or so. He does that, but the tire then still shows a "heavy spot" of 40lbs. Far from optimal, I guess.
While watching him do the other 3 wheels, I notice that on one, there is a visible wobble. Remember, these were replaced at least once already. I ask the guy, and he says that it's fine as the balancer does not complain . Needless to say, no improvement.
So I go home, passing the other out of town store on the way. I pull in as they forgot to put two valve plugs back on yesterday. The tech asks how the truck rides. I tell him the whole road force story, incl. about the still 40lbs heavy spot, and even show him the chalk marks on tire / wheel from the rotation on the rim. He immediately wants to replace that tire. So here we go, yet another new BFG AT 265/75-R16!!!!:
Now it's again better, and I am at a point where I don't know anymore what's normal and what is not. It sure isn't what I'd call smooth, but for sure the best ballance job yet.
I have decided to lean back now and drive it for a couple weeks, and make a decision then, as I am really, really, really sick of wasting my time (today was 4 hours alone) with this. I will either keep it as is (but I doubt it, to be honest) or have them replace all 4 with Revo's.
Hey, my message to those looking into BFG's is: be aware of the problems you possibly could run into! I know there are people with no problems, but I am sure having a headache right now. 7 or 8 balancing jobs with 5 tire replacements? Not good ....

I had no problems getting my new tires installed and balanced properly. I have Goodyear Wranglers, but all I'm saying is that they do balance well and i wouldn't blame the truck or wheels.

I was thinking of some BFG's for the next set, do other ATKO owners have this same problem?
i had my 265/70 bfg at's balanced with a road-force balancer after hearing of all the positive things mentioned here. unfortunately, i do have a slight shimmy coming back through the steering wheel right around 60 mph. it doesn't bother me all that much and the wifey hasn't said anything, so i'm okay living with it. hopefully it does the trick for you though, good luck!
That's weird
I just got 4 new Firestone Destination M/T's 265/75R16's mounted on the stock TRD wheels No shake, vibration or anything strange, just sound a little louder because they are mudders. TSB on rear and 5100's all around at 1.75
I've noticed the highway ride isn't that great with my BFG AT's. No steering wheel shimmy but vibrations on smooth highway. Not awful but much worse than the Dunflops. I don't know if it's a characteristic of a heavier 8 ply tire or something else. The positive is that I can go offroad with confidence so it's a trade-off I'm willing to accept.

That's where I am at right now. No wheel shake but vibrations on a smooth highway. I am not yet ready to accept this as normal. Maybe others will tell us it is? But I think there are others here who reported a smooth ride. A little more road noise, that's expected and ok, but I don't think it should vibrate.
I don't think it is!
My BFG's AT ride great!

Smooooooth as Glass!

You just gave me a little more hope! Thanks, I'll keep on trying! Maybe tomorrow will be better!
Wow, same type of problem I had with America's Tire Co (same as Discount Tire) a couple of years ago with Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armors. 3 of 5 tires defective of which the last one occurred after almost a month...bad steering shake began 3 weeks later.

I got a full refund from them and went back to the dealership. No problems with wheel balancing there (BTW, I'm all stock). BFG All Terrains are smooth as can be including on the highway...much smoother than both the Dunlops and Rugged Trails!!!!!!! And I really, really mean it!!! No kidding!!!! I had slight steering shake after the truck sat for many hours when I first got on the freeway with both the Dunlops and Rugged Trails. Not so with the All Terrains!

So, I now have to wonder if it's the equipment at America's Tire/Discount Tire or maybe a lack of training? Because you've described the exact problem I had with a different brand tire. BTW, I'll never go with Goodyears again (I have an issue with Wranglers on another vehicle...2 defective tires that leak air only when it's cold out).

Its a common problem with BFGs. I have ran 2 sets of M/Ts, the first needed ALLOT of weight, so bad that 4wheel parst could not balance them (and they wouldent replace it either). The second was not so bad. Other than that I loved them.
But because of the balance problems and now they where down faster, Im giving Nittos a try.

If I can't get the BFG's balanced properly, then they already offered me to try a different tire. While having to go back sucks, I still can't complain about the service (I mean the people there and how they try to help).
Any suggestions what to try? Maybe a tire slightly lighter?
But hey, I am not giving up yet, as I otherwise really like the BFG AT's!
man this is really scaring me away from buying some BFG AT in the near future :/
This is neither here nor there but a couple of years ago I had a real hard time balancing some BFG A/T's that I was running on a Wrangler and the tire store tech's couldn't really figure it out either.

Based on my experience (and a lot of others - like sechsgang here), those BFG A/T's sure seem like they can have serious balancing issues. IMO you've gotta be sure you need them and aren't just getting them for looks, especially considering how sensitive these Tacomas seem to be to tire and/or wheel changes. Just my 2 cents :dunno:

Im not sure. The only other after market tires that Ive ran (other than the BFGs) was ProComp Xterains and I did not like them. Ive heard more good things then bad about the Nittos, and about 50/50 with the BFG's. I still like and would like to run BFGs, but not for the headache and price. If they can get the balancing right, they will do you good.
This is sad... I've been away from trucks since 02... every truck before that going back ... always had BFG AT's... never had a prob... Michelin makes em.... or did they sell it off to a no name company?
It's weird considering they come from the factory on H2 Hummers. You would think if they were so "hit or miss", GM wouldnt bother with them.

I do think that the Tacomas are a little sensitive to any kind of off balance, especially with heavier tires and aftermarket rims (which in itself are usually not as good as the factory ones). There may be a few different things adding up here and together resulting in these problems ....

Or that the we get the ones GM rejects

But seriously the H2 is whole different (6700 lb.) animal, running BFG's (~35's) that most light trucks will never see - apples to oranges
At the beginning of the year i bought and had BFG AT KO 285/70/17 installed and i love then and i have had no problems with then. sorry to hear about all the trouble your having....
