As I understand it...the Corolla hatchback has a navagation gps system that relies on connection with a cell phone and also requires data to operate. There are many places one may venture where cell phone/data is not available, and the need for navigation is great. is there a way to load maps into the Corolla system so it functions as an old school garmin gps navigator/ map?

No, not without the premium audio system that has built-in navigation.

What I do is save the area in google maps on my phone. When I went to Colorado I saved half the state. I have most of my home state saved too. I was driving 4 hours into the mountains up an extra mile in elevation and couldn’t count on cell data and it works perfectly. No live traffic data but roads and addresses in the region you save update automatically.

Having read through the Navigation manual, combined with my past experience with Navigation systems in cars, the database resides (is stored) in the car. The car/system then uses GPS to locate the vehicle on the stored map. The Nav manual indicates that updates are manually performed, not updated in real time.
