You can turn it back a little bit. With the plugs out there should not be any compression in the cylinders. When it gets hard to turn, back off a minute and slowly inch it forward. If it pops past the mark just turn it the opposite direction. A little backward movement won't hurt but I would not do revolutions backward.

I just did another timing belt/water pump job last week. I have found that using a long handle ratchet makes it much easier to turn to set or check timing. Since you are using less force, you are much less likely to over shoot when it gives. Throw in a couple of long extensions and it becomes much more comfortable and easier to keep an eye both marks.

I like this one: http://www.harborfreight.com/12-in-drive-extendable-ratchet-62311.html

Ok this is where I am at now
After many after attempts I managed to get the timing belt on and lined up afte I rotated it twice. rotated 2 more time and it lined up again decided to go for 3 times is the charm rotated two more times and everything lined up again...happy dance.
reinstalled everything replaced the spark plugs

and it still wont start.

did a compression test on cylinders 1 & 3 and have 170psi on each then got rained out.

still have and oil leak, more than likely it is the oil pump oring that I had trouble getting to stay in place even with the grease method. I will repelace that if I can get it to start.

I will check for spark and the compression on cylinders 2 & 4 tomorrow evening after work weather permitting.

if any body has a suggestion what to check next please let me know

Thanks

Travis

^+1.

Also, did you catch in the DIY that there is a second mark for the cam pulley that some people mistakenly align the pulley to? See this pic from the DIY:

Yes the crankshaft sensor was reinstalled and connected

I did align the camshaft with the V notch.

This is why I do not normallt do timing belts. Lol

I will dbl check that the sensor is plugged in tomorrow after work

Ok. I did a compression test and all cylinders are between 160 & 170 psi

When this started I had spark but I do not have spark now
I have checked the fuses that according to owners manual would have anything to do with generating spark and they are all good

What else do I need to check?

Yeah. When the passwords were all reset, I didn't have access to the email account that I used to register back in 2009, so I can't get to the email.

Admin didn't seem eager to help me regain access (replied to one email in 2 months), so I went ahead and made a new account.
If you want, I can let the admins know that you'd like your old ID back.

I do have a serious oil leak and as much trouble as I had getting the oil pump o-ring to stay in place I am going to bet that it slipped when I was putting the oil pump back on so it all comes apart again tonight.
I will try putting grease in the slot for it

Use something tacky, like trans assembly lube (I use Lubegard Assemblee Goo). Once you get the housing plate over it, wiggle it a bit to see if you can feel the o-ring stuck between before tossing in the bolts.
