I recently just rebuild my 22r and finally got her running smoothly, or so I think.

The motor sounds good, starts right up and idles smooth. When I drove her around the neighborhood everything went well. It wasn't until I took her out on the main road I noticed something wrong.

She won't go above 40-45, doesn't matter what gear. I would give her all she's got in first and second throughout the neighborhood and hit max rpms just fine. Would pull beautifully.

I did however just but some used 4.10 gears in the rear and I am wondering if that could be the issue?

Speed should be irrelevant to the rear diff right? Just rpms and load? That's what I don't get. Engine is fine in neutral, rpms climb and lower just fine. Throughout 1st, 2nd and mostly 3rd everything is great but at 40 ish mph it feels like I'm pulling a boat uphill. Also there where zero issues with the transmission prior to rebuild of motor.

Thanks for any adive, much appreciated.

Pinion gear is definitely bad, had play up and down/ left to right. Would that really have an affect on speed though? Like I said I thought rear diff was just rpm/load effected. Shouldn't madder what gear ratio I'm in right?

The truck has 33 by 12.5 tires so I rebuilt my 3 member about 5 months ago with 4.88s. Before I could get to the front diff I ended up having to rebuild the motor.

Now it's winter and I need 4wd so I picked up a third member 4.10, so front and rear match, just to get me through the winter.

So I find out some more details today. First of all the pinion bearing is definitely bad, no denying that, however the issue of not being able to get above 45 is most likely not due to that.

I heard that your harmonic balancer will sometimes break apart from its in portion. Therefore causing your timing mark to be off from the actual notch on the crank. If that's the case I could have my timing off by x amount of degrees. I will check in a bit but has anyone heard of this? Or know of a fix other than a new balancer?

33s and 4.10s will result in a loss of power and mpg, but won't limit your top speed like you describe.
IDK about the harmonic balancer, but a clogged cat converter can really strangle an engine.

I checked the harmonic balancer and it checks out fine. I feel like it is timing but it's weird because why can I pull 1st and 2nd just fine. Something keeps bring me back to my cam. It's an rv2 will valves set to 6 and 8 based off of 22re.com

Also not cat... kinda blowing my mind here.
