A while back i posted a thread asking for advice on putting a 4af into my ae82. It's in and runs fine, just needs a little love. However, when I go to shift, I have only forward gears. It feels like 1 and 4 (maybe) no reverse, and I can't feel any "gates" as it were. I've tried reinstalling the shifter, I took it out once, maybe I didn't put it back on right. No go. I've checked, both of the cables go to the right spot, the bracket from the old tranny that came out of the car that holds the cables is functionally the same as the new one. I'm stumped and greasy and frustrated. If anyone has any theories/suggestions or better yet knows how to fix this, please respond. I need this car on the road soon, tommorrow morning ideally.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the quick replies

4agetercel- The engine in the car previously was a 4ac. Both engines have the same tranny. I bought an engine and tranny at the same time, I decided to swap the new one in as it had at least 100k less miles. So, in response, it is a new(er) identical transmission.

corollafx16- How did your cables fail? Were they broken? Binding? Mine both move freely when disconnected and transfer movement from one end to the other (not broken). Given that the mounting brackets on the tranny are identical, I don't think it is a misalignment issue. Thanks for your input but I don't think the problem is in the cables.

Does anyone have any pictures of the shifter assembly in the ae82 fwd car?

Any other input?

well try going in the engine bay and moving the gears yourself without the shifter cables to see it you have all gears. Maybe you hooked up the cables wrong? If you can cycle through all the gears by hand im sayin your linkage is goofed up.

Thanks for the response!

4agetercel- it looks like it was the linkage. Not the "spinner" but the "pusher-puller" lever was bent a little. Hard to see in the car but when I pulled it off and put it next to another one you could see it was bent. Yep, the StupidFX iss now up and running. After some testing last night, we'' see how it does in the snow going over the pass. Thanks for the response.
