Just got my 08' (access cab) and I am really liking it. I read that the audio system leaves something to be desired, and I agreed once I cranked it up a bit. I figured on removing it.
I am going to install a double DIN system with all the bells and whistles.
I am considereing a Jensen with touchscreen, bluetooth, ipod ready, CD/DVD/R/RW, even SD and USB slots so there are many ways to get tunes into the unit.... Looks like its got it all.

BUT........

What size speakers do I need for the front and back doors?
What are you guys using for brands that sound good?

I image I might just disconnect those tiny tweeters on the front doors.

Please shoot me all your opinions and what you like.

Thanks in advance

I will read through it more and see if I get the info i am looking for in there.

Mainly its just the sizes and brand that people with experince like and have used.

You're going to get a lot of people's presonal preference on that. Mostly, what they have had good luck with. In my case, I like Infinity Kappa speakers, but don't have much experience to compare equal speakers. You can find good deals on audio through eBay. Goodluck!

My personal preference, would be stay away from Jenson product. I know it has all the bells and whistles, and it's inexpensive, but it is complete junk.
As far as speakers go, look into kicker, eclipse, alpine, MB Quarts, JL Audio, Higher end Pioneer's, just to name a few. Trust me, stay away from Jenson!

As others have said stay away from Jensen head units. You are much better off buying lower end Pioneer, Alpine, Eclipse, ect. A good compromise is JVC. I've had good luck with them. You can get a JVC KW-AVX800 for less than the Jensen VM9022.
For speakers that don't cost a fortune look at Infinity, Polk, Pioneer and Alpine. Any from these brands are better than the stock Toyota.
For the front use component speakers where you have separate woofer (Mid) and tweeter. The little speaker at the top of the door is the tweeter. These will sound much better than a two way pointing at you legs.
Nothing will bolt directly in to the existing speaker holes. You have to buy or make speaker baffles. Use 6.5" front and rear. If you want to save a little money skip the rear speakers. For example; If you intend on spending $300.00 on speakers you are better off getting higher end front speakers and no rear speakers than buying two sets of $150.00 speakers.
The thread Pb showed you explains the baffles and how to install everything. You can buy baffles from TacoTunes.com or contact Mr. Marv to build you a set. Search the forum for "Mr. Marv".
Just a new head unit and speakers will make a big difference but the addition of an amp will help even more.

Great advice, I will look into the other head units. I know Jensen has been around a long time, so I figured it would be a good unit. Good advice before I buy.

I will likely replace all 4 speakers with the 6.5s you suggest. If the NEW front ones also have a tweeter in them, should I just disconnect the small ones up high on the door? If I wire them in as well, and the head unit only has 4 channels, can I wire it in series with the new 6.5 in the door? I think the little tweeter must be wired in with the existing door speakers cause the stock unit is only 4 channel.

Thanks again, I will be doing this project when the weather warms up a bit here (Boston). But I want to have all the parts in hand when I'm ready so it gets done in one shot.

Any more info is greatly appreciated. Keep em' coming.

If you go through the trouble of putting in new speakers... just put in a 6 1/2" component system and replace the stock tweeters. The new woofer and tweeter connect to a little box called a crossover, which then connects to the two wires headed back to the head unit. Really the only way to go. As for brands... Alpine, Infinity... Pioneer are my favs (links to $100-$150 models that you probably can't go wrong with, the ~$250 models of all three of these guys are very nice)

Nevertheless, the stock tweeter and woofer are wired in parallel, not series...

Mr Marv's baffles are nice, just got mine yesterday. A much better option than going out the the freezing garage and cutting them myself I reckon.

(I'm putting in Kappa Perfects also... though I'm kind of thinking I should have gone with the Pioneer TS-C720PRS, which seems very highly regarded in the diy audio crowd, esp for the price :dunno:)

OK so if I do it this way, the crossover box stays in the door??? and only one set (+/-) go back to the head unit? Guys here said don't bother with the rear speakers BUT, I could wire the stock rear speakers and just fade all front if I don't like the sound. That would be the same as not connecting them at all.(This might work?).

You can put the X-over box in the door... but now I know why Cam2Xrunner told me not to... they get loose over time and rattle, on top of that, water and humidity get in em. So when I get my Kappa Perfects, the X-overs are goin where the amps are . If you want to get the most out of your new speakers/components, I recommend spending another $100-$150 for a 2-channel amp, or a 4-channel if you wanna get the rears going too.

80,

Yes, that would work as you described. I did that exact thing, and fyi, there is room on the DRY side of the door panel to mount the crossover, toward the rear of the door, if you trim a little of the funny foam block. Stays dry thay way, at least. Also mounted it on foam insulation strips to isolate vibrations.

But I found I liked the faded-front sound stage, as Cam predicted, and since I also went with his recommendations on the Pioneer products, the head unit could do active crossovers, and that's what I did. So I had to bring a second set of speaker wires into the front door, wired each component to a different channel, took the passive crossover back off, and played around for a while. Actually better, IMHO. Now all four channels go to the front doors, none left for rears.

I'm not running a separate amp. Sound level is plenty loud for me, keeps me from doing ear damage, but obviously the speakers can handle more. This summer I'll put in a couple small subs in the rear doors after I do a little more deadening. That's what the rear doors are for! (I have an access cab.)

That (deadening and sound isolation) could be your next project, too! Look up Doc's sound deadening tome for inspiration.
