I have a gentex dimming rear-view mirror. Does anyone know a wire i can tap into that so that when i do shift into reverse, the mirror DOESN'T auto dim. I have a 98 camry le i4 auto.

Well, one option would be to install a switch near the gear lever so you can turn the mirror off without reaching up to do it. The hard way would be to track down and tap into the circuits to the "D" light in the gauge cluster, so the mirror only gets power when the car is in drive ("D"). Of course you would need relays, and a fair bit of info on your car's wiring. The easy way... just live with it, I do.

There is a reverse wire ...red with a black stripe ....that goes from the Neutral Safety Switch to the ECU ...and should be high...or 12v...when you shift into reverse gear.
You can probably access this wire if you look behind the right side passenger kick panel...Try to find connector J27...Check the wire with a voltmeter, as you shift into reverse.
Just to clarify...you want to inhibit the dimming feature of the mirror as you shift into reverse ...right? ... So that your reverse tail lights give you some illumination.
If the power to the mirror were deactivated when you shift into reverse, would that be sufficient?
Do you have any sort of wiring diagram or schematic of the mirror installation?

It looks like you might be able to use the red/black reverse wire to activate a small relay that would turn off the power to the mirror ...when in reverse gear. Do you think that would work? ... That is, when not in reverse, the mirror would receive 12v, and when in reverse, the mirror would be off.

That might work, but I've never seen a relay that cuts power when it gets a 12v signal. As far as I know, relays "relay" power to whatever they may be connected to when they get a 12v signal, and not cut power.

Right...you have to get a specific relay that is normally closed, and then when activated is 'open circuit'...Maybe I can find one someplace...

I think I've found the type of relay needed for this mirror setup...

Gives me some new ideas, now that I know about them.

A Single pole /Double Throw Relay ought to work if you wire it correctly...
Maybe something like this:
http://www.radioshack.com/product/i...res&origkw=relays&support=support&tab=summary

Use a continuity tester to verify that two of the relay 'contact' terminals are normally closed ... 'have continuity'...with no power applied, and are 'open circuit' ... no continuity ... when 12 volts is applied to the two coil terminals.

The idea is that you would wire the mirror power supply wire into the normally closed contacts of the SPDT Relay, and then have another wire connecting the Reverse wire to the Relay coil activation terminal...also connect one of the Relay coil activation terminals to a solid chassis ground someplace.

Red with black stripe, thanks.

My mirror has 5 pin. 1st one goes to 12 volt red(ignition), 2nd one goes to ground and 3rd one disables the dim when in reverse.

So when in reverse it would get some kind of charge on the 3rd pin and it would disable dim.

Right ... it looks like the mirror just needs 12v from the reverse wire ...when you shift into reverse gear. See if you can locate the red wire with a black stripe...It looks like it is behind the right passenger kick panel...going into a connector probably...If you have a test light or a meter, check to see that the wire that you pick is the right one...and gets 12v when in reverse gear.
Splice into the wire and connect it to the 3rd pin on the mirror...if that's the way it works.

I am going to necro this thread.

Albuynp, did you trace all the wires from the mirror? What was the path.
I want to put a switch inline so the mirror does not auto-activate.
I will be putting the switch near the side-view mirror controls.
