What do u guys think about Ford's decision to change the name of the 500 back to Taurus. Maybe its b/c I grew up in the 80s and parents owned a 90 Taurus, but the name Taurus as applied to the Ford car, really gives me that warm fuzzy feeling. This is all despite the fact that the car was a total piece of SH!T. I remember that the car back then was a beauty, looked absolutely stunning. I know there are a number if younger guys on here who remember the Taurus when it was first introduced in '86, let's hear what you think.

the taurus saved ford back in the day because of its 'futuristic' styling...however, slapping on some different emblems along with a few other little changes is not going to save ford this time imo

I can maybe, possibly see the logic for changing the 500 to Taurus. It was the last Domestic mid-sizer to take on Camry and Accord and beat them in sales. The original '86 Taurus was quite revolutionary for its time, was actually a well built car, and was well received by critics. It's too bad Ford let it whither and die, first by the odd oval styling of the 90's and then no budget. Ford's own studies have found that 40% of consumers don't even know the 500 exists.

Here's where things don't make sense. They are also renaming the Freestyle crossover the "Taurus X" and the Mercury Montego (500 twin) the Sable.

Taurus "X"?

It's panic in Dearborn. It's amazing to me that they are now using a brand name that just 2 years ago was thought to be so damaged it couldn't be used again, on 2 different models.

Let's just say 500 makes the car feel older than it really is. I thought the Fusion would take over the Taurus and the Five Hundred over the Crown Victoria. To me, the Five Hundred is the equivalent of the Avalon - a large, softly sprung, comfortable highway cruiser.

If people actually buy the 500 now that it's renamed the "Taurus" it only proves how dumb people are. Imagine two people in a car lot, "Heck, I would never buy that 500, wow that Taurus sure looks tempting." They stop making the Taurus, 500 sales are slumping, I think they sold 3,000 last month vs. 27,000 Camry, so they rename it Taurus and hope that nobody would notice.

Save the initials and numbers for higher end cars, i.e. Lexus, Infiniti, BMW, MB, etc

Lower to middle end cars need name recognition and names that make people feel emotion.

I.e. Toyota Highlander vs. Lexus RX 330, Toyota Camry vs. Lexus ES 330,etc, etc, etc, etc. In fact I don't think any of the aforementioned (previously mentioned) companies have a car with an actual 'name' rather than a 'class' and engine size code.

Oh, yeah here's an idea for ALL domestic manufacturers, build a safe, reliable car that people feel confident in buying. If I could buy a domestic car for HALF the price of a Toyota, I'd still buy the Toyota. With 90,000 miles on my car I still would feel comfortable knowing that I could drive it for another 90,000 without any major problems.

Peace of mind is something domestic manufacturers are not able to offer, a car purchase is a logical purchase as well as an emotional one. For example I didn't want to spend another $1,000 on a moonroof in our Highlander (logical) but I wanted my wife to have side and curtain airbags for her safety (emotional). I've never spent an extra $1,000 on anything and not think twice. In the case of the HL, I've never looked back.

If I don't have confidence in the reliability of your vehicle I will therefore not have the confidence to spend my hard earned money on your vehicle. I'll never drive a car beyond 150,000 miles but knowing that I CAN will help me to justify spending more on it. With the HL purchase we only looking at Toyota vs. Honda, NOTHING else. I could have cared less if Ford was selling their SUV for $5,000, I still wouldn't have purchased it.

Sorry for the rant.

i dont think changing the name back to taurus is actually going to help ford at all. the only new sales they're gonna get are from people who want to buy the car because they recognize the taurus name.

The name isnt going to change how lame of a car it is. I'd much rather have a G8 or a Charger for that price, at least its RWD.

Wow, Ford just dug another foot deep into the ground. I'm surprised by this. I think I saw an advertisment on the "new" Mercury Sable and I was like wasn't that discontinued and the Taurus? Wow, just wow! Desperation. Yeah the 500 didn't make too much of a splash, sure I see them once in awhile but the Fusion is where it is at. Even if the 500 didn't make too much of a impact I think it will still confuse the naming and customers and so its just a mess, then again that's Ford.:thumbdown

who needs to flush the tranny when you have to replace it every 30k miles??

IT SAVES MAINTENANCE COSTS DUH!

I will say one thing though, when the leather covering on the door panel falls off, it does make it easier to clean.

see what i don't understand even more is that the 500 is actually competitor of the Avalon/Maxima's, the Fuzion is more of the Cam/Cord competitor right? i think they are just hoping that the name "Taurus" is gonna help boost their sales but as everyone else mention changing only the name isn't gonna save much, perhaps maybe their next move is changing the Focus back to Escort considering how much the redesign looks so much like the 90's Escort.

exactly, they are just getting desperate with this move, but i think it will work just how they want it to, like the polls said, 40% of people don't even know the 500 exists, for the name taurus, it's pretty much the opposite, by doing this, i think they see immediate sales increases, people are dumb, they will see the taurus and buy it, even though it was the same car that they may have turned down months previously.

Reading this thread I was about to post the same thing until I read your post. You took the words right out of my mouth.

If only 40% of people know about the 500, you still have a huge market for the new and improved Taurus.:naughty: Ford is hoping to gain on the publics stupidity.

Not to mention Ford seems to have issues with names... it can't make up its mind on the Lincoln side and now it's bringing that indecisiveness to the Ford brand. I wonder if that schizophrenia moved department

what Ford needs to do now is stick with the Fuzion name, their next model change should really push the Fuzion to compete against the Camry's and Accord's, even GM is sending a strong message with the new Malibu, then they should kill the Taurus/500 name plate and use a new name with a new platform to go against the Avalon's and Maxima's, although Crown Vic sounds pretty old, its much better than using the tarnish Taurus/500 name, leave the numbers and letters to the upscale brand such as Lincoln and Mercury, in fact they can follow GM's footsteps and use Euro Ford cars and brand them as Mercury while moving Lincoln even more upscale to compete against BMW, MB, and Lexus.
