Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum, as well as to my truck. It's an 88 4wd with a 22re engine, and EFI. My quandry is this: It will not stay running. It turns over fine, and then stalls out. If I give it a little throttle, it revs momentarily and eventually dies, while I continue to give it gas. The check engine light has not come on, and I have attempted to jump the ECU w/a paper clip to see if I get any reading. Before doing so, I cleaned out the contacts for a good connection. To no avail thus far. I have spent a few hours rereading prior threads to see if I could get any insight, and have been stymied to this point. Part of the uncertainty is because of my own lack of mechanical knowledge and insight. But I'm not afraid to try, and am hoping someone here may be gracious enough to impart their suggestions. Any help is gratefully appreciated. Thanks for your time....

A little background- I just bought the truck, and don't know if the fuel filter has been changed. The fuel gauge also quit working recently, and I am wondering if the fuel pump may or may not be part of the problem. The spark plugs are not fouled, other than that, I am only guessing as to any previous history on the truck, as there was little to go with when I got it. Thanks again.

update on my quandry

Ok, thanks for the suggestions, first off. I have done this much so far:

Checked the Mass Air Flow Sensor. It seems fine, all resistances are within normal ranges.

Changed the fuel filter, new plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor.

Cleaned the throttle body and air cleaner.

Checked for faulty wiring, and ruptured/cracked vacuum lines.

My fuel pump is working, or at least whirring, checked it by jumping Fp and B terminals in ECU.

Measured resistances on TPS with ohmeter, all within normal ranges.

I am getting codes 41 and 51 now, and am feeling a bit over my head. Truck is a manual w/o AC, so that eliminated some of the possible faults, leaving a IDL switch problem possible.

I am going step by step thru the FSM, and am a bit overwhelmed at this point.

Would appreciate any thoughts, suggestions, words of encouragement, etc.

Thank you very kindly, I am grateful for your insight. If I appear to sound like I don't know what I"m talking about in any of this, it's true. But doggone it, I'm not giving up !

fosterkid im in the same exact situation as you i think, mine does the same thing, it starts and runs fine till about 2 or 3 seconds after i start it then starts spuddering then stauls and if i give it gas then it slowly and i mean slowly creeps up in rpm like 15 to 20 seconds full rev but can still hear spudder and not drivable because of it.i replaced all wires, checked most sencors, sparkplugs, distributor, new fuel filter, and checked for good air flow on it to see if was good and all checked out, if you hear anything please let me know as it may be the same problem for me! thanks
