Depends on what you consider "serious"? Aside from that - pretty reliable. Only issues that are known on the 1.8L (2ZR-FE) variant:

- VVT-i sprocket TSB, some owners experienced excessive valvetrain noise coming from the VVT-i system. Most got coverage under warranty.
- recall for adding "Smart Stop" programming, basically cuts throttle if the ECM sees that both the brake and gas are depressed.
- also related above - pedal modification, basically shims the gas pedal to make sure that there is no way for it to become trapped under a floor mat
- recall for power master switch on the driver's door - lack of lubrication or contamination with solvent (ie, cleaning) could result in overheating and damage

The 2.4L variant (I have on of these) added the oil consumption problem that was known for some of the 2AZ-FE corporate engine.

Otherwise, pretty solid car. Fortunately, I don't seem to be affected with excessive oil consumption that some others have seen. Mine uses only a couple of oz per 5K mile oil change, for almost 100K miles on the car, I can live with that. Also didn't do the pedal recall or Smart Stop recall - didn't want to change the height of the pedal, like to retain some control with two foot driving (braking + accelerating) - useful in snow/sand, etc. Power master switch recall - they actually broke on of the clips - so now I'm waiting for a replacement.

Just replace fluids and filters on a regular basis. Not much in terms of a "tune up" anymore - plugs are good for 100K miles, coolant 5yr/100K miles, etc. Just replace parts that wear out, break.

As a side note, I have performed none of these and my car works fine reasons in red:

- VVT-i sprocket TSB, some owners experienced excessive valvetrain noise coming from the VVT-i system. Most got coverage under warranty. I use synthetic oil 5w30 currently trying 5w40 and this isn't an issue..often from what I have read if it does occur it has no detrimental effect and warranty work to fix it sometimes doesn't.
- recall for adding "Smart Stop" programming, basically cuts throttle if the ECM sees that both the brake and gas are depressed. I have no need for this, I know how to drive, only an idiot presses both of these pedals at the same time.
- also related above - pedal modification, basically shims the gas pedal to make sure that there is no way for it to become trapped under a floor mat I have no need for this, I have the stock floor mats and it is not possible for this to occur. This is for the morons who stack mats and have all kinds of garbage underfoot when they drive.
- recall for power master switch on the driver's door - lack of lubrication or contamination with solvent (ie, cleaning) could result in overheating and damage I don't use solvents for cleaning and my car never gets dirty enough to require more than a damp cloth, it still functions as new with 187K mi on the odo

Did switching to a heavier oil have any effect on mileage?

ZERO effect so far. I have over 4 tanks of above 42 mpgUS since the oil change from 5w30.
