Hi I just recently purchased a 1993 4wd toyota pick up for 1800 at 160k miles. So i'm doing mass research in the forum and was wondering what is the difference between 22R, 22RE, 22REC, and 22RTEC. Which one do i have? Thanks alot

22R is carburated, regardless of year.

22RE is fuel injected, regardless of year.

So if yours has a carb, it's a 22R. If it has EFI, it's a 22RE, no exceptions. Since you have a 4x4, it should be a 22RE.

If you open your hood (which you should often to check fluid levels) you will see a label on the valve cover,if there is a round air filter on top of the valve cover then you have a 22R=carburator,you can also see the carb itself. You have a 1993 therefore I am pretty certain you have a 22R-E, for full details since you asked such a basic question I thought I would give you full details about the 4-Runners/pickups:

In North America the 22R & 22R-E s are used in the following:

22R
1981-82 Toyota Corona
1981-83 Celica
1981-87 Toyota pickup (up to 1990 on 2wd)
1984-87 Toyota 4-Runner

22R-E (22REC=California emissions=extra charcoal canister)
1983-85 Celica
1985-95 Toyota pickup
1985-95 Toyota 4-Runner

22RTE (Turbo EFI)
1985-87 Toyota pickup
1985-87 Toyota 4-Runner

Except for when the PO changes the motor, head, valve cover, etc like mine. I haven't checked all the numbers, but the valve cover said 22RE when I bought it, definitely not a 22re under there. Oh, and my hood is a after market knock-off, no labels at all.

PO's suck ;)

Sidney is a wealth of info. Cool !
