Get to basics and perform a compression check.

Also, a distributor can be installed a bunch of times, and STILL not be right. Take an OLD distributor cap and cut/drill an inspection hole in the #1 position. Punching out the metal terminal will help.

Line up the crank @ 0 degrees on the #1 compression stroke, install the distributor, and ensure the rotor and #1 cap tower are directly over each other.

I had a similar problem after a HG replacement, and this process worked perfect! Total cost:$0.00

^nice trick, I'll have to remember that.
Also, check your cam timing. If thats off, you could have the same symptoms. Check your vacuum.
