No Reverse!! ('93 Camry)
So I park my car in a parking space and go into a shop for a few minutes. I come back out, turn my car on, put it into reverse, and lightly step on the gas. The Engine revs, the car goes nowhere just like it is in neutral. So I shift into drive, go forward an inch. Drive is apparently fine. Back to reverse and still nothing. Car off, back on, still no reverse. So I put the car in neutral and stick my leg out the door and push it back a little. Still no reverse. I put the car in neutral and get out and push it out of the parking spot. I get in, put it in drive. Go across the street to the other store I was going to (Careful to park in a pull through space so I don’t need reverse). Go in for about five minutes and come back out and still no reverse. I look under the hood, nothing obviously wrong from looking at things.
So, I drive it to Toyota Service to get an estimate. The guy there checks the transmission fluid and notices it is dark and that it has specs in it. His prediction, a new transmission. Estimation: $3200-3600 for a Toyota rebuilt transmission. He knows a guy that used to work there that rebuilds/salvages transmission that will sell one for $500-$700 cheaper. (As a side note, unlike most service guys I actually trust this guy, he did seem honest and knowledge, he said he has a ’92 Camry and his daughter has a Camry with a transmission from the guy he knows.) I have checked online before and my car is worth about $2k give or take, that means my car is totaled ($2,000-$3,000 = -$1000). I asked the service guy and he said he would also check about people wanting a Camry with a bad transmission.
I am have been looking at getting a new car (the Scion tC) in maybe a year. But now it will be hard for me to afford it, though not necessarily impossible. I am looking at options.
Anyways, what do you guys think about all this? Do you think I need a new transmission?
Anybody want to buy a Camry with a bad transmission? Give me price, if you can beat what the Toyota guy, and the junk yards want I may sell it to you. It is in great shape besides that. I would love to sell this car to an enthusiast; I have grown to love it over the years. I would hate to see her go to a junk yard.
It is a ’93 Toyota Camry LE Sedan with a 4cyl Automatic Transmission. My Dad purchased it in 1992, he babied the car. I got the car in 2001 with about 120,000 miles. It now has ~160,800 miles. I still ALL the records. Every single service, oil change, and tire rotation is in the glove box. I am located in the Atlanta area.
Tomorrow I go back and decide what to do. Any ideas, comments? Any cheaper solutions? What should I do, would you just get a new tC?
