I'm need to replace the O2 sensor and the cable goes up into the body and i can't see any connecter around the O2 sensor. So i was wondering if there is a specific sensor i need to get or will a universal one work, or is there a wire splice kit i can get. I have an 88 with 22re

Go to www.rockauto.com and look up you make/year and click on additional info to see a photo. The “plug” on some sensors appears to be just a wire that splices in using a wire connector. Hence, no plug. If this car a non-California emission type, would think a universal should work. Just run the wire you need and splice it in as required.

Swansen,

I am in california and also have an 88 22re. I just replaced my O2 sensor with a Bosch universal one from Autozone; part# 15728. $69.99 and it came with the necessary splice kit. It actually is a pretty cool setup! It sure beats having to pay well over $100 for the same sensor everywhere else.

I'm not sure if I understand if you are asking for the connector location. Mine is located under the carpet on the driver's side of the cab. The new sensor kit requires you to use the existing connector plug and grommet. I just cut the old sensor cable 5 inches before the grommet and spliced the new sensor into the piece of cable with grommet and connector. The sensor works great; I just passed CA smog test with flying colors. Hope this helps.

The oxygen sensor is replaced for free in the USA only when the vehicle reaches it's first 80 000 miles regardless of the age & number of owners as stated in the factory owner's manual in the maintenance section, some Toyota dealerships are reluctant to replace it for free if that happens contact the Toyota regional head office for your region where they will give your local dealership 48 hours to comply.
On average the oxygen sensors should be replaced every 6 years or 100 000 miles or so which ever comes first as stated in the owner's manual, warranty booklet and factory service manual.

Symptoms of a bad o2 sensor are poor gas mileage, hesistation in acceleration, worse emmissions, and in severe cases after the stat opens the engine can no longer maintain stable 750 rpm (with manual 5 spd tranny) idle and the engine begins to stall.

The 02 sensor is designed to function once the vehicle has warmed up which is about after 10 minutes where the thermostat begins to open at 190 or 195 degrees Ferenheit depending on thermostat then the vehicles ECU system enters what they call a "closed loop system" then the exhaust manifold's temperature reaches 400 degree Ferenheit (I think)that's where the sensor starts to do it's job which is usually when the thermostat first opens up then the oxygen sensor senses the ratio of air to fuel and sends a signal back to the ECU then ECU compensates by increasing or decrease the open time for the fuel injectors to pump fuel.

So usually the problem of stalling shows up after about 10 minutes of driving or so.Many folks think that the o2 sensor is bad but an exhaust leak can cause excess oxygen to enter the exhaust system thereby fooling the sensor into thinking there is too much oxygen, there are other problems that could cause it to give false reading such as a vaccuum leak.

If you discover that the o2 sensor is bad and it is not under warranty then from my/others experience/research purchase an o2 sensor in the following order:

1)Toyota (NipponDenso now called Denso)
2)Denso aftermarket (Same as original but sold aftermarket)
3)NTK (oxygen sensor division of NGK)

hey sidney i'll check into that, but i highly highlt doubt that is true, but i might as well check. Lol, yes, after seeing a picture of a new sensor i looked under the seat and there is was. Granted the senor that you have to splice is is about $40 more. Now that i think of it, it wouldn't be worth me having to drive like 20 miles to the nearest dealer, and then have to deal with them, just so they will install the O2 sensor labor free, when i can do it myself. But thanks anyways, that would be great for people who have a lower mechanical knowledge.

honestly the only way to know if a dealer replaced it, would be to ask a dealer around there for their records on O2 sensor replacments. Which would kinda be unlikely that they would just tell you, might be able to ask them if it was done there and all that. Otherwise there is no real way of knowing.
