It can, yes. There may or may not be one though. There can be pending, active, and stored codes and only the active codes will illuminate the CEL. Even without a code you can use it to look at data from the various sensors which is very helpful for diagnostics.
OBD2 scanning tool quick question
I've been working on cars since the 90s. Believe it or not, I've never used a OBD2 scanner. I have a question about them. Can it still scan for codes even if you don't get a "check Engine" light?
