I am modeling this after the thread in the 5/6th generation forums made by hardtopte72 (much will be plagiarized straight from that thread). Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?!?!

Let’s keep the thread chat to a minimum, as much of the stuff here is open for debate on what is “best”. I’m not going to pass judgement on “best”, rather make a list of what is available. Discussion of “best” should be pursued in another thread.

There are 3 sections (in this order): Filters, Fluids, Parts. Sections are organized as Bold/Underline is major heading, Underline is usually Brand, and Italics is usually Product of the Brand.

Note: For the US market in the Camry, the 5SFE is the 4 cylinder used from 1992-2001, the 3VZFE is the V6 used from 1992-1993, and 1MZFE is the V6 used from 1994-2001. Other markets may use different engines, like the Australian market which switched from the 3VZFE to the 1MZ in 1997. For the Solara, the 5SFE is the 4 cylinder used from 1999-2001, the 2AZFE is the 4 cylinder used from 2002-2003, and the 1MZFE is the V6 used from 1999-2003.

The Camry and Solara Generations are as follows:

1992-1996 Camry is Gen 3, which included a new V6 for 1994 model year and a facelift for the 1995 model year
1997-2001 Camry is Gen 4, which included revised engines from the Gen 3 and a facelift for the 2000 model year
1999-2003 Solara is Gen 1, which included the revised engines from the Gen 4 and an all new I4 engine and facelift for the 2002 model year

Oil Filters:

When doing an oil change, it is HIGHLY ADVISABLE to replace the oil pan drain plug gasket/crush washer. These can be purchased from Toyota, eBay, or Amazon from around 50 cents to 1 dollar each. I buy mine in packs of 10 for $5.50 shipped on eBay.

Oil filters are an important part of the overall maintenance of your car. All filters are not created equal and filtering is not a job for the cheap. There are several acceptable oil filters available for the 3rd and 4th Gen Camry. I will describe most of them below and cite whatever references I can. I would recommend switching from the stock filter size to the oversize, as it is not much larger but provides more filtration surface. I’m unsure if using the V6 filter is recommended, although it fits it may drain due to the inverted placement on the I4, use at your own discretion and report back.

Oil filter terms:
OCI- oil change interval
ADBV- anti-drainback valve

Purolator: Purolator makes three different oil filters in their self named line. A standard "Premium Protection" filter, higher quality "Advanced Protection" filter, and synthetic oil "Maximum Protection" filter.

Purolator: Is the lower line filter. It is advertised with a 96.5 efficiency rating at 20 microns, 13g of "dirt holding" capacity and 5,000 mile oil change interval. It uses a rubber ADBV and paper/fiber media

PurolatorOne: Is the next in line filter. It is advertised with a 99% efficiency rating at 20 microns, 15g of "dirt holding" capacity and 10,000 mile oil change interval. It uses a silicone ADBV and paper/synthetic blend media.

Purolator Boss: Is the top of the line filter. It is advertised with a 99+ % efficiency rating at 20 microns, 27g of "dirt holding" capacity and 15,000 mile oil change interval with synthetic oils. It uses a silicone ADBV and a full synthetic media.

Bosch: These filters are made by Purolator ever since their merger. Two filters are offered in line with Purolator.

Bosch Premium: In line with a Purolator classic. Nearly identical in every way.

Bosch DistancePlus: This filter is basically a Purolator PureOne with a larger case and filter area to hold more particles. It is rated 99% at 20 microns. This filter has been shown to be good to a 15K mile OCI. It does not feature a rough texture finish.

Wix: Wix makes a very high quality line of filters. They also make the Napa brand filter.

Wix: High quality construct, silicone ADBV, and a tough case make this a good filter. 99% at 25 microns efficiency.

Napa: All but recent Pro-Select are Wix made filters that expand on the line. Available in Pro-Select, Silver, and Gold (I don't see a Platinum listing). Which denote their place in the line. Pro-select is the low line, gold has top level features (more pleats, better filtering, etc.).

Pro-Select: This is a low line filter which recently appears to made on a contract basis (still likely Wix/Affinia). These use a controversial combo valve ADBV.

Silver: This is the mid level Wix made filter. Great filter for the money. Comparable to a Purolator Classic.

Nascar Select: This is their supposedly soon to be discontinued specialty line of filters. Features a unique "Spin-Flow" technology and a synthetic media. Claims to have some of the highest single pass efficiency in the industry.

From Napa "In traditional oil filters, unfiltered oil is forced under pressure through holes in the filter base plate directly to the top of the canister, creating turbulence in the filter. This constant turbulence concentrates the filtration of the dirty oil at one end of the filter media, resulting in only about 60 percent of the filter media doing the majority of the work.

The Spin-Flow technology, developed by Wix Filtration and used exclusively by NAPA for automotive applications, uses a ring of angled fins to force the dirty oil to flow in a circular motion around the filter media. This process evens out the flow of the dirty oil and virtually eliminates turbulence, thus using the entire filter media and maximizing the capacity and efficiency of the filter." "In addition to Spin-Flow technology, the NASCAR Select filter also features a newly designed filter media, combining cellulose with synthetic fibers. This new media, called T-52, was also developed by Wix Filtration for NAPA automotive use. T-52 greatly increases the filter's "Single-Pass Efficiency," which is a measure of how much of the oil's contaminates are removed in a single trip through the filter. NASCAR Select has one of the highest Single-Pass Efficiency ratings in the industry. "

Platinum: This is their top of the line oil filter. This filter is specified specifically to be used with synthetic oil for extended drain intervals 10,000 miles or above. Tons of capacity at the expense of filtering ability.

Wix XP: Some say this is the same as the Napa Platinum. Some also say the data shows this filter has a terrible efficiency rating at 20 microns (50%). Regardless, Wix considers it their premium filter. It uses a wire backed synthetic media and is recommended for longer drain intervals on synthetic oil.

Mobil 1 and K&N: Great filters at a hefty price. These are 20 micron 99% filters made by Champion Labs. They feature all of the top of the line features you would expect from only the best. The K&N features a welded nut to aid in removal.

Denso: Denso makes the OEM Oil filter for these cars. It is made in several places. In spin-on form this is one of the most peculiar designed oil filters available. It features no end caps, rubber ADBV, and generally poor construction similar to a OCOD fram, though tests have shown them very reliable and generally having a filter media with a larger surface area than the competition..

Available in three to four sizes depending on whether buying from Toyota or Denso directly.

Fram: All but one of Fram's filters (The Ultra/Extended Guard) is complete garbage. The others use cardboard end caps and are generally poorly constructed. Cheap is their only good quality.

Ultra/Extended Guard: The Ultra/Extended Guard is a good quality and very robust filter right in the middle of the high quality pack. It uses a double pleat synthetic media and is designed for a 10K OCI. It's 97% efficiency rated at 20 microns. There appears to be a difference between the Ultra and Extended Guard though they use the same part number. The Ultra is the updated version that replaces the Extended Guard. Updates with the Ultra include a 15K OCI, 99% at 20 microns efficiency rating, and an awesome looking metal supported dual synthetic layer media. This new Fram Ultra filter appears to be the best filter ever made by Fram and right at the top level of oil filters. If it shows to be reliable, there isn't a filter available that offers more. Expect it to be a little pricy compared to other quality filters like the PureOne but considering it offers a 15K interval, it may be a bargain.

Those are the bulk of it. Most other oil filters are made by the above listed companies under other names (Motorcraft is Purolator, A/C Delco is a lower level Champion Labs, Carquest made by Wix).


Engine Air Filters:

Air filters are shown to be directly responsible for oil condition. There are a few available here as well. I will only discuss the OEM filter as I am a firm believer that cold air intakes are detrimental to filtering as most cone filters available filter worse than factory (and therefore flow more).

Denso: This is by far the best quality filter available. Featuring a 3 layer element to filter small, medium, and large particles and a perfect fit this filter is the best of the bunch.

Fuel Filters:

Fuel filters are an important part of overall maintenance. While Toyota specifies either no interval or 60K, the vast majority of vehicles, still use original filters. Replacement is not too hard and once you see inside of one, you will see the benefit to replacement.

Transmission Filters:

These transmission uses a screen type filter element. While they are not known to clog, they could still stand to be replaced at reasonable intervals (say 100K miles) as an additional part of good fluid maintenance.

Engine Oil:

The life blood of the engine. Synthetic oil is recommended for better wear protection, extended intervals, fuel economy, and startability. The decision of what kind of oil you run can make the difference between an oil burner, 200K miles, or your fuel economy. Not all oils are created equal. Running synthetic oil and changing at 3K is a waste of money. These oils are proven to go up to 15K miles between oil changes!

Mobil 1: Oils are of excellent quality. TGMO (Toyota Genuine Motor Oil) is Mobil 1 oil with a special formulation. I will describe the synthetic lines.

Mobil 1 is grouped into 6 basic types of synthetic. Mobil 1 Annual Protection, Mobil 1, Mobil 1 Extended Performance, Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy, Mobil 1 High Mileage, and Mobil 1 Emission System Protection.

The Mobil 1 oil is has shown to be a high quality oil for all engines. It is available from 0W40, 5W20, 5W30, 10W30, and 15W50.

Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy: Is a great oil as well shown to be superior in quality to the Mobil 1 on a few occasions. It is available only a 0W20 or 0W30. This oil has all the benefits of the 5W20 or 5W30 oil respectively but offers cold weather operation and reduces cold start wear. This is the oil I used to run in all of my cars.

Mobil 1 Annual Protection: A higher end oil from Mobil 1. It is designed to be used for extended drains of up to 20K miles or 1 year. Available in 0W20, 5W20, and 5W30.

Mobil 1 Emission System Performance: A newer oil which is specifically engineered for modern diesel and gasoline engines with emission systems components like modern diesel particulate filters and catalytic converters in mind. Available in 0W30 and 5W30.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance: A higher end oil from Mobil 1. It is designed to be used for extended drains of up to 15K miles. Available in 0W20, 5W20, 5W30, and 10W30.

Mobil 1 High Mileage: For use in vehicles with over 75K miles. Has more seal conditioners, anti-wear additives, and detergents than other Mobil 1 oils. Available as a 5W30, 10W30, and 10W40.

Pennzoil Platinum: Pennzoil's line of synthetic motor oil. The newest formulations are made from compressed natural gas, and are some of the cleanest oils available today. These oils, like many others, are made by SOPUS.

Pennzoil Platinum is now grouped into 3 basic types of synthetic oils: Pennzoil Platinum, Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage, and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum.

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum: Even better than Pennzoil Platinum. Claims to be 25% cleaner than Mobil 1, 35% cleaner than Valvoline SynPower, and 40% Cleaner than Castrol Edge with Syntec. Available in 0W-20, 0W40, 5W-20, 5W-30, and 10W-30.

Pennzoil Platinum: It is dubbed as one of the cleanest oils claiming to be 8% cleaner than Mobil 1, 17% Cleaner than Valvoline, and 20% Cleaner than Castrol. This is supposed to be a great oil for cleaning out your engine of varnish.

This oil comes in 4 basic sub-types: US, Euro, Euro Diesel, and Racing. The Euro diesel is specifically engineered for European diesel engines and includes:

Euro L: For gasoline engines or DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) equipped diesel engines. Is ACEA C3 and Dexos approved.
Euro LX: Thinner variant of the Euro L that is ACEA C2/C3 approved.
Euro AV: Specifically engineered for high performance and TDI diesel engines. It has surpassed the requirements for VW and Peugot in house testing.

US is available in 0W-20, 5W-20, 5W-30, and 10W-30.
Euro is available in 0W30, 5W30, and 5W40
Euro L is available in 5W30
Euro LX is available in 0W30
Euro AV is available in 5W30
Racing is available in 10W60

Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage: For use in vehicles with over 75K miles. Has more seal conditioners, anti-wear additives, and detergents than other Pennzoil Platinum oils. This has become the go to oil for my fleet. Available in 5W20 and 5W30.

Antifreeze/Coolant:

Coolant brings about more arguments than any fluid except maybe motor oil. The only real requirement is that the coolant be a P-HOAT (Phosphated Hybrid Organic Acid Technology) coolant that does not contain 2EHA (Dexcool or Dexclones), silicates, amines, or borates. I am an avid user of Toyota Pink and Zerex Asian Vehicle coolant. Other highly recommended coolants include Toyota Red Concentrate, Honda Type 2 (Honda Blue), Pentofrost A1 (Red), Pentofrost A2 (Green), Pentofrost A3 (Blue), Pentofrost A4 (Pink), Beck/Arnley Premium Extended Life Pink, Beck/Arnley Premium OE Extended Life Blue, Beck/Arnley Premium OE Red Concentrate, Beck/Arnley Premium OE Green Concentrate, Reochem OEM Premium Extended Life Red, Reochem OEM Premium Extended Life Pink, Reochem OEM Premium Extended Life Blue, and many other OEM coolants. Replace every 60-80K.

Note: With Pentofrost and Beck/Arnley, the only real differences between each of their individual coolants is the color, as the specs are identical between them.

Transmission Fluid for A/T:

Another hot topic. Original specification is for Dexron II or Dexron III depending on the year. All these specifications have moved towards Dexron III. I (HardtopTE72) have personally used the newer more modern synthetic Valvoline Maxlife in these older transmissions. Any fluid that meets Dexron III specification will work just fine. In general transmission fluids can be thinner in viscosity than the original (and likely outdated) fluid but not the other way around. Dexron VI which is around a 5 cSt fluid replaces all Dexron applications including the 7+ cSt Dexron II spec. While fluids like Maxlife and Dexron VI are initially thinner, they are also vastly superior. One of the main benefits is that they are more shear stable. Meaning while they start thinner, they stay relaitively close in viscosity compared to conventional Dexron III or Dexron III which shears down pretty significantly. In short, newer and thinner fluid works fine.

Castrol:

Castrol TransMax Full Synthetic Multi-Vehicle ATF: Meets the requirements for Dexron III. Fully synthetic fluid which is likely a response to Valvoline Maxlife Dex/Merc as a low viscosity modern ATF. It likely also works for WS but doesn't directly say so (says recommended for all Toyota transmissions).

Valvoline Import Multi-Vehicle ATF: Now similar in formulation to Castrol Import Multi-Vehicle ATF with around a 1 cSt lower viscosity (6.9 vs 8). Fully synthetic fluid still and likely a good alternative to the Castrol Import which is more easily found in quart bottles. This fluid is sold at lots of places in the 1 gallon bottles. Highly recommended.

Gear Oil for M/T:

Most agree on a few good oils. Toyota manual tranmissions need to have a GL4 oil to prevent damage to the yellow metal inside the transmission. Synthetic gear oil is amazing and works great in the cold for smooth buttery shifts. Replace all every 30K.

Redline MT90: My favorite. Available on Amazon or from Redline for about 13 bucks a quart.

Power Steering Fluid:

Replace every 2-3 years. The power steering requires any Dexron compatible ATF as opposed to the clear generic stuff. I prefer to use Valvoline Maxlife or Castrol Transmax. You can however use any Dexron compatible ATF you wish (I have even used Toyota T-IV with great results).


Brake Fluid:

Replace every 2-3 years. I prefer to use any available synthetic DOT 3 or DOT4 fluid I can find at the auto parts store such as Wearever, Prestone, or Valvoline. Other high quality "boutique" fluids like Motul or other name brands may not be worth the cost for a daily driven car.


Spark Plugs:

Spark plugs on these engines are recommended every 60-90K if using OEM equivalent plugs. The Gen 4 uses a "Waste-Spark" system and came standard with Double Platinum/Twin-Tip Spark Plugs. The Gen 3 uses either an individual COP or Distributor and as such has the option to use the Iridium Long Life plugs. The Iridium Long Life are better in every way compared to their Platinum counterparts. I prefer Denso plugs as they are what comes factory on most Toyotas (NGK to a lesser degree). I have installed NGK on several cars and had no issues. Plug gap for a 5SFE and 1MZFE is .44 while the plug gap for the 3VZFE is .32. The general consensus is you don't gap Iridium or Double Platinum Plugs as they come pregapped. My preference would be the Denso Iridium Twin-Tip for Gen 3 and 4 or NGK Laser Platinum for Gen 4 only. The 2AZFE powered Solara is recommended to use Iridium only.

Brake Pads, Shoes, and Rotors:

Not all brakes are created equal. Rotor quality and pad quality can mean the difference between squeaks or brake fade in emergencies or stop and go driving. OEM pads are low dust ceramic in the front. I highly recommend using the OEM hardware when doing a brake job.

Once your suspension is shot from the decades of driving, here are the most prevalent options for replacement. While I have no experience with any of them personally, I gather from forum posts as well as Amazon comments that the below are the best for you to choose from in their respective categories. Let me also say that I believe that one thing that almost everyone has said is that all of the below have mounts that are inferior to OEM; however, the advantage to these are that they come as a single unit for easy installation (as opposed to ordering an OEM mount and all the other hardware for you to put together and install yourself. I will only list the “quick-strut” type, which comes as a complete and easily installed unit. There is “economy” and “original ride quality”.

Wiper Blades:

The OEM wiper blades for the 3rd and 4th Gen Camry and 1st Gen Solara are of the outdated frame design. They have 6 pressure points that make contact with the glass and when the blade wears out streaking occurs. I have updated the OEM style blades on my cars to the updated OEM Toyota/Denso Designer wiper blades available on newer models. There are also several frameless style blades available with the Denso Designer being the same exact blade as OEM. Lengths for the 3rd and 4th Gen Camry are 21 inches for the driver side and 19 inches for the passenger side and lengths for the 1st Gen Solara are 22 inches for the driver side and 21 inches for the passenger side. I highly recommend switching the Gen 3 and 4 Camry driver to either a 20" or 22" driver side to give you the added convenience of insert replacement available through the dealer parts department. For the Solara, I highly recommend attempting to fit a 22" passenger side or moving down to a 20" passenger side for the same reasons.

Drive Belts:

The highly recommended belts for these cars include OEM/Bando, Gates/Napa Micro-V, and the Goodyear Gatorback. If you have a squeak you can't adjust, are doing a timing belt replacement job, or they are cracked, glazed, or broken, replacing the belts is a good idea.

OEM Toyota: The OEM belts are made by Mitsuboshi, Bando, or Dayco and can be purchased from a dealership or aftermarket.

Battery:

All Gen 3 & 4 Camrys in the USA market take a BCI group 35 battery. Be aware there is a group 25 battery that is the exact same size, but with the pos/neg terminals swapped. Don't use one of those by mistake!

In the northern areas (Canadian market?), Camry vehicles were sometimes ordered with a "Winter Weather Package", that had a bigger group 24F battery.

Yeah, I started it, then had a second child so I just posted what I had and have not had much time to work on it any more.

Of course you can update it as you please and add it to the sticky.

I tried to leave out anything that I was not reasonably sure about, but there may be mistakes (but as far as the internet goes, I think there is more fact here then many other places ;) ).

I have been going through and updating all the stickies. I just made some significant updates to the cooling, fuel filter, transmission filter, transmission fluid, and minor updates to some other sections. I will edit/update/complete as I have time and since the thread is yours, you also have the power to do so.

Great job. I see you formatted your bold/underline/italics a little different so I stuck to that.

To throw a wrench into the hotly debated ATF topic...

Two years ago when I contacted Valvoline about my 2001 Camry V6 I got the reply below. There is no mention of using "Valvoline Import Multi-Vehicle Automatic Transmission Fluid" for this particular car. I believe that fluid is for Toyota's requiring Type T, T-II, and T-IV except hybrids. This from Valvoline...


Your 2001 Toyota Camry came factory filled with Dexron III ATF in both the automatic transmission and the power steering reservoir, you have a couple different fluid options. Valvoline Dex/Merc ATF and our Valvoline MaxLife ATF product are Dexron III compatible and will both be suitable for mixture or replacement in the automatic transmission and power steering reservoir on your Toyota Camry.

The Valvoline MaxLife ATF product is designed and formulated as a synthetic ATF with seal conditioners, to assist in keeping high mileage vehicles from developing leaks from seals that are dry-rotted or cracked. The Valvoline Dex/Merc ATF product is a conventional product designed for applications that don't require a synthetic fluid and meets or exceeds all the Dexron III ATF requirements.

T-III is literally just Dexron III. In some TSBs, Toyota even calls it Dexron III:

I don't know why the Valvoline rep didn't mention it then. They said MaxLife ATF and Dex/Merc ATF, with no mention of the Import Multi-Vehicle trans fluid. If you are right then I have 3 different Valvoline trans fluids to choose from. More confusion. I'll take my chances on the Supertech ATF "used in vehicles that previously used Dex II and III. It has worked just fine so far.

I appreciate all the impressive helpful info ! I just got my first Toyota from original owner. She faithfully took it to dealer for all scheduled maintenance and any problems. It is a year 2000 V-6 Camry LE, with auto trans. Mileage is 213K. She decided to sell it rather than fix the broken shifter cable. I found the needed help with that job here.

Just thought I'd throw in my first post. I was digging around for info on cabin air filters for my 2000 Camry LE....called my local Toy dealer, and asked a service tech if my car even had one. He said they didn't start putting them in till 03 or 04. Also, do I really NEED a torque wrench for installing new spark plugs? Manual says to torque them to 13 ft-lbs.....lowest my torque goes is 20. Thanks in advance for any help!

Many people hand-tighten their spark plugs.
Also, there is a diy of a cabin air filter install from a es300 somewhere on this site. From what I remember, the camry has an empty space that's sealed off where the filter can go, you just have to cut the plastic and get the cover off of an es300.

The valvoline MAX LIFE ATF has 2 types one which says (75,000 dex merc) and one that is full synthetic (dex merc LV) which one I should use for both transmission and power steering? doesnt max life means high mileage? is LV compatible to dexron iii any feedback would be greatly appreciated

Same fluid/compatibility, different bottles.

The bottle that says "75000" is the older bottle and shouldn't be common. The newer bottle says Dex/Merc Mercon LV. I have used both extensively in power steering and transmissions. I can't find the older bottles anymore as they have all been replaced with the newer bottles.

Also, a group 24F battery is the exact same height and depth, just a little longer. MUCH more powerful! Was the same price for me and it fit like a glove. A larger battery should technically last a little longer. If you want pictures let me know.

Also, the specs for the K&N oil filter is out of date. They're made in Mexico and Korea now and are 85% efficient at 20 microns.

Coolant brings about more arguments than any fluid except maybe motor oil. The only real requirement is that the coolant be a P-HOAT (Phosphated Hybrid Organic Acid Technology) coolant that does not contain 2EHA (Dexcool or Dexclones) said:
I am little confused. It looks like the DexCool is not recommended by you but according to Toyota manual you can use any Glycol based coolant and DexCool is Glycol based. I am currently running my 99 Camry on red DexCool as it was at good price at Walmart, should I flush the radiator and change to something else? Thanks for advise

Your 99 Camry would have come with a P-HOAT Toyota Red. Toyota is an Ethylene Glycol coolant. I don't know of any non "Glycol" coolants. There are either Ethylene Glycol or Propolene Glycol coolants. As for the manual, older manuals had no coolant preference and 1995 and older models came with standard Green silicate coolant. Since around 2000, Toyota specifically recommends "their" coolant. In reality, they want a P-HOAT coolant.

As for your car, if the coolant is in there, it is in there. Personally, "I" would flush it all out.

at thirteen pounds...if your hands were big enough you could hand tighten them...I use a 3/8's clickety torque wrench with a magnetized swivel socket with an 8" extension attached. at $10 a piece I don't want to drop the plugs....I use a light copper based anti -seize,,, mostly out of habit...
