I am getting alot of oil coming from the bottom little U hole between the engine and tranny housing. The U hole is just rear of the bottom most bolt from tranny to engine housing. Between the tranny pan and exhaust.

here is the picture from my gallery:

Would this be the rear engine seal? It is motor oil and not tranny fluid.

I checked all other suspect areas (valve cover gasket etc)

Is it a hard job to do yourself. I am a shade tree mechanic with lots of experience with Volvos

I'm interested to see other people's opinions on this as well. I know that my manual says to take the engine out with the trans as a set and then take them apart. If this is the case it is very labor intensive. The vehicle must be supported high enough in the air for the engine to come out from underneath of it once it is removed and lowered.

Having it high enough in the air is probably the hardest part of the home mechanic. Disconnect everything, then unbolt the sub frame and it lowers right with the front wheels.
