After searching I've come up with many different opinions on oil and filters. Here is my plan (I'm sure some will disagree) but I just want to make sure as this will be my first oil change on our 2009 Toyota Camry SE w/ 54,000 miles.

Filter: Purolator PureOne (Where do you guys buy yours?)

Oil: Mobil1 5w20 Synthetic (I'm a huge Tony Stewart fan)

Do I need to replace the drain plug gasket? I read one person does that.

I buy my OEM filters on eBay in bulk and motor oil is all personal preference. I change my drain plug gasket every oil change. Pretty much everything is personal preference. There is no right and wrong. If you want to use PureOne because its cheaper or for whatever reason, go ahead. If you like Mobil1 because of Tony Stewart, no one is stopping you.

First oil change at 54,000 miles? It should be done every 5,000 miles since this is when the maintenance light turns on unless you bought the car used.

I buy my PureOne oil filters at Advance Auto Parts or Amazon.com. If you have a V6 go with OEM filters. I4 stay with PureOne. Oil I buy at Walmart.

The drain plug gasket should be replaced everytime you change the oil. You can buy a bag of 10 at the dealer or box of 2 on Amazon.

I use OEM filters purchased off the internet and Mobil l 0W-30 oil purchased at[I have a hard time getting it out] Walmart. Five quart container was something like $26.00 about three weeks ago. I haven't found Mobil l at a better price anywhere. The Purolator brand is a good choice. If you can purchase the OEM oil at a dealer for less, I would go with that. Regards

It's always a good idea to have a few spare gaskets in your tool box, but if it hasn't been wet before the oil change, then there is a good chance it will remain dry afterwords. It depends a little on the gasket. I prefer the soft copper type. Others like the aluminum crush type. In the end they all work, but when in doubt, replace it. They are very cheap.

Walmart started selling purolator classics. Its 97.5% efficiency, which is close enough for the convenience ofr getting the oil and filter same place cheap. You can get q 5qt jug of M1 and a Purolator classic for $31. The washer may need to be replaced, you dont know that being the first time. Should have one as backup. My dealer gives them away. if you yave a dealership in the area just go in and ask.

The Toyota paper gaskets hold up pretty well. I change mine out finally about three oil changes ago, and though it was stuck to the drain plug and had to be cut to remove, it still held out perfectly. I'm sure I could've kept using it, but I had a set I bought with different sizes for my brother's taurus and I though "Ehh... what the hell, why not".

If you have an I4 I repeat do not get OEM filters. Their construction is comparable to lower end Fram filters. As for the gasket it needs to be replaced every oil change. While it may not leak you are slowly but surely destroying the threads of the oil pan. Smashed, or missing gaskets were the cause of every stripped pan I replaced at my dealer.

If you have a V6 the OEM is a great filter.

M1 Filter and M1 0w-20 is about $38 at Walmart, been sticking with M1's stuff way before the Camry. I do like to try new things though, might go with Amsoil my next change. I don't normally change the gasket, but I'm sure it needs to be done the next oil change.

They don't sell M1 at any of the walmarts around here. Nothing on the web either. Bummer.

Mobil 1 doesn't have as good efficiency (just by a little) as the Purolator PureOne or Bosch Distance Plus.

For the price the PureOne can't be beat.

I run 5w-30 Royal Purple, change every 8-10k miles depending on how much driving or tracking i do... if i track a lot during an oil change interval i do it at 8k miles.

If the washer is ok as stated, i don't change it, but i do it every other oil change.

FRAM makes a lot of oem filters i think.
some ppl like it some ppl think its crap.
their air filters are good though lol

TRD is like .02% better than oem or something lol. it is cool looking compared to oem, it has a metal top and bottom. i used to use it. but oem filters is like 4$ and TRD is 10. you won't ever notice a difference though. i surely didn't.

but i do oil change with filter every 3-5k so i think the oem will do fine in catching all of the impurities.

Who's going to know you have TRD air filter? No one and I don't think anyone will get down to the floor just to see.
Thats what I thought too lol... :D
$$$ OEM oil is = $$$ Mobil 1 Oil 0W-20...
Total for Oil Change = 30 bucks
Total for Buying Oil/ filter and putting it in your car = 40 bucks (30 bucks for me)
Take it to dealership to do oil change may be cheaper but they'll turn around and tell you that you have to fix this, fix that and a whole slew of other things. You'll be at the dealership for about 2 hours.

I'll pay the few extra bucks. At least I know that its done correctly and done with care. It takes me about 30-45 mins to do oil change.

Yeah they make good air filters, but many arent aware of the Fram Xtended Guard oil filter which ame out past few years. Not all Frams are the same OCOD. The "Gold can" XG is as good as any filter on the market. Pricey (8.97 at Walmart) The xtended guard filter is a two ply full synthetic media that is wrapped around a stainless steel screen backing. This is held in place by metal end caps. 10k oil change intervals, some people use it twice.

I stopped using the XG and started using the purolator classic when walmart started selling them few months ago. Mainly because I dont go 10k, so I cut my filter budget in half. What I noticed right away was how paper thin the purolator classic is, and no sure grip, very slippery. Hopefully will be easy to get off like the XG was.
