Hello everyone..I am a proud new owner of a 2006 Toyota Sienna XLE FWD..I have 46,000 miles on it right now..In the owners manual it says it is normal to consume up to 1qt of oil after 600 miles...this is my first Japanese vehicle..I have two american vehicles with over 140,000 miles on them and never lost a drop between oil changes...I've found to be a quart low after 2000 miles...what kind of oil consumption is everyone else getting??

Thanks,
Joe

oil

Hi Joe,
I have an '04 Sienna LE (3.3L V6) with 31,000 miles on it. I have not lost any oil during that time. I've often heard it can be considered normal to burn 1 quart of oil every 3,000 miles (depends on manufacturer), but I've yet to own a vehicle that lost oil during "normal" use. By your owner's manual, burning 1 quart every 600 miles is considered normal??? After 3,000 miles, you could potentially burn up 5 quarts of oil??? Sounds ridiculous. Have you noticed any leaks or blue smoke???

I wish I could see what you're talking about, by the '02 I recently bought doesn't have an Owner's Manual :(

If, however, it says exactly what you wrote "...to consume up to 1 quart of oil after 600 miles," then my assumption is that they mean after the first 600 miles. I've never owned a new vehicle, so I can't say for sure, but I know that after you rebuild an engine, you can expect to burn a little extra oil for the first few hundred until the rings are well seated. Of course, you would usually change the oil a couple of times in that first few hundred miles on a rebuild, so I've never actually seen how much burns.

By the way, wish me luck. The "new" van in my driveway had its oil changed recently by the PO, but somehow arrived at my house about half a quart low. I haven't put many miles on it yet, but I'm really hoping it was underfilled and didn't burn that fast. Anybody know at what kind of burn rate I would expect to see smoke out the pipe? I don't see anything now, even on startup in the morning.

from what I recall it said up to 1 quart per 600 miles...again I'm finding a quart low after 2000 miles. according to the manual it is normal to comsume some oil between oil changes. was wondering if anyone took note how many miles on your sienna that you go a quart low...or do you notice any oil consumption at all..I'm using valvoline durablend with a toyota filter on mine...as suggested by my dealer.
