oil filter magnets

do these things really help? me and a friend were debating this today. neither of us cant see how they would hurt anything but are they actually a benefit the engine to use them?

I'm sure that they will help SLIGHTLY.

I've personally never used them but have considered it several times.
You could probably just find a small magnet at a hobby or electronic supply store to do the same thing. Or if you have a busted hard drive, you can take the drive apart and stick that magnet on the side.
I guess ill consider this next oil change, can't hurt....
Yes they do. If you want to see a magnet do its job , get a magnetic oil drain plug. Bought one for my old Honda and there was always crap on the magnet. My motorcycle even comes with a magnetic drain plug stock from the factory.

There obviously not useless... you can use them as a paper weight!

ever cut open a "metal" oil filter and see its passages?

if you are interested in those i can also find you exhaust magnets. they'll give you a boost in gas efficiency
