pound puppy my 97 camry 2.2 had an oil leak of epic proportions...
I thought it was the oil pump seal or the crank seal but when i put it back together it still leaked badly.
Long story short...i took the oil pump off, and the gasket laying in the groove was like dried pasta..
The first gasket i tried was from a Dorman Kit and it was all gnarled up and just nasty,,, it would not lay in that groove to save my life...
I bought a Toyota oil pump gasket to day, and it almost fit but the longer i fuss with it the worse it gets...I swear it's longer than when i started....
I am going to clean it off and put it in the fridge.....
So, Is there a secret to getting the gasket to stay, where it belongs long enough to put the Oil Pump on it?

I have most of a tub of Lubegard Assemblee Goo (trans assembly lube). It's like extra-tacky Vaseline and goes away quick, I've been using that with no problems.

EDIT: If you had a leak from the oil pump, I'd do a thorough check-out of the timing belt and associated components...the first 5S-FE timing belt job I did was a failure due to such an oil leak. The second was due to the water pump pulley breaking and leaking coolant all over (pulley broke completely a couple days later, but timing belt was broken).

Do you put the RTV, Vaseline in the groove then persuade the gasket in.
any tips on which way to start it? Stuffing myself into the wheel well of a car is not as much fun as it used to be....in the extreme I have considered removing the strut, from the steering knuckle......so i can get both hands in and maybe see wtf I am doing
Having the car up on a rack would prolly make it easier...
I will see if I can find some of that trans assembly lube, or maybe freeze some petroleum jelly...is there a non petroleum product you can think of that would work....so the gasket won't expand, and get all slimy and uncooperative....this is being a much larger PITA than i had anticipated
Thanks for taking the time to help,,,,it is much appreciated

I used ATF and the job went smoothly. "Glue" the gasket with sticky ATF to either the pump or the block, and it will stay in place long enough for you to mate the pump to the block. I mean, you can even pull the stick out of your transmission a few times (assuming it's auto) and smear that onto the gasket if you don't have any ATF bottles laying around.

the biggest problem i have is stuffing my 6'3' frame into the wheel well with enough room left over for my hands to manipulate the gasket. and still have the off chance of being able to see it....then the gasket gets noodlely and won't settle in the groove.....
So making it more slippery is counter productive for my needs...... I am going to stick the gasket in the freezer over nite and see if that improves it's disposition....and reduce its flexibility for about 90 seconds, while i get it in the groove and stick the pump on it.. then I am going to contemplate what will be the best medium for holding the gasketsicle in place till i can get the pump on it
While we're talking about gaskets and seals I have the following pns from my local Toyota dealer 15165-70010 seal. and15188-03011 for the gasket....I coughed up almost $18 for the strip of polypropylene yesterday......I'd rather not do that again.........i need a source for OEM quality seals.....i have a feeling this is not the last time i'm going to do this...
Is there any need for further sealant on the face of the pump?
My back is pissed off tonight so i'm going to clean out the seal groove. and let the gasket get nice and crispy...
Thanks as always Paul in L.A.

...trust me on this. It'll hold it in place, use as much as you want.

No need for additional sealant (RTV, etc.). My go-to is Fel-Pro P/N: ES72499, $3.31 on RockAuto. Has both oil pump shaft seal and the o-ring. When you put in the shaft seal, make sure it doesn't seat all the way down: it must be flush with the housing surface so as to not block the drain port behind it.

Well that was fun.....I wanted to use a clean gasket but the replacement from Rock Auto didn't come in time. the Goo did...
I swear there was this little bubble of polyprop i could not get out of the seal...it was as if it had stretched,
So I did what any other self respecting red neck would do.....I got it as straight as i could...borrowed ... a pair of my wife's cuticle scissors and cut like maybe this much out of it (_) so it lay flat just touching......I ran it for ten minutes and there were no visible drips....
Before i took off the belt I rotated the motor by hand till the camshaft was clunked over all the way....and the pointer on the cam pulley was angled off properly......
so if you don't take the plugs out it takes and act of intent not an accident to nudge it out of its static timing
Next week D/S lower control arm and lower ball joint
Thanks again
ai'm going to go find a martini
