My mother-in-law has a 95 4runner that has a cracked head gasket. She said if I get it fixed she will give it to me. I am far from a mechanic but am willing to learn. Is it worth spending the money to get it fixed? Should I get the head gasket fixed or drop in a another motor? If a motor, rebuilt or junkyard? I am hearing that it would cost between $1800 to $2300? I am sure there might be some other options out there that I don't know about. Any thoughts would be very helpful.

Thats a big job for somebody who really isn't all that mechanical, i'd suggest having a reputable shop fix it and it'll probably be trouble free for years. A lot of people will probably suggest swapping for the bigger 6 cyl but i guess thats a preferance thing and more costly!

Call your local community college or vocational school and have the automotive mechanics course students replace your headgasket for free. Also find local off-roaders near you as Toyotas, Jeeps and Suzukis seem to the most popular among off-roaders and hence those guys could replace your headgasket for $200 or so.

22r and 22re is the toyota 4 cyl motor. bulletproof if you ask me, i had one in a little tacoma and they had plenty of power with good fuel economy but might be a tad underpowered for a runner im not sure. i believe the r is carburated and the re in fuel injected. I had the re and it was fuel injected!
