Howdy folks,

Truck - 1997 T100 2.7L 5 spd - 2wd - 190k

So my speedo never really worked right on the truck, bounced around if I gave it more throttle it would visibly slip etc..

Finally it went kaput, the odometer worked for a while then that quit too (well reads about a mile per 100-200 miles currently).

Anyhow I have the P0500 code and wanted to repair it.

I removed the speedo gear from the trans. I tested it out spinning and it moved the speedo gauge no problem. The teeth were very worn and inconsistent on it so it seemed to be a no brainer and I ordered a new one.

Replaced it with the Toyota part, tested it prior to install and it moved the speedo gauge no problem. So I installed it. Upon driving no reading on the speedometer still.

So I drained a damn quart of trans fluid, removed it again and tested it again. It moves the speedo. Then I learned there is a VSS sensor behind the dash that might be a culprit so I tested the gear with the ignition on and this time with a power drill to get it up to 25mph. Works just fine with ignition on.

Only time it wont work is when seated into the transmission. What the hell? I have inspected the interior gear that the speedo cable connects to and it looks fine. I cannot view it spinning as I'd need the cable out and the vehicle moving and I'm a one man show and don't feel safe doing that.

Any ideas? Is testing this with the ignition on not good enough? The mechanical side seems to be working properly except for if it isn't seated properly internally to the trans. But if the gauge reads with the ignition on is that good enough or what? I am so lost.

Update.

Pulled instrument cluster.

Vehicle is on jack stands to raise rear axle.

Ran car in 1st with speedo hooked up and there is no movement at the instrument end. Since I've confirmed it works and reads when operated by hand or power drill I guess we can pretty much asses that for whatever reason the speedo gear is not seating to the internal gear in the trans to allow it to get a reading. Why, I have no idea.

Not the best news that the issue is with an internal gear on the trans though...

Update.

Put car in 1st, let it idle and took a look under the truck. The internal gear is spinning.

So... for some reason, the internal gear is not seating to the speedo gear. I have no idea why, I really don't know what do to but that connection is the failure. Its a brand new speedo gear, internal gear looks undamaged. There is really only one way to fit the speedo drive into the trans, straight in and secured with a bolt.

WTF

First off...welcome to the T100 board!

Secondly, it appears that you've confirmed that the speedo gear, cable, etc.. is working fine. The po500 code could be a couple other things beside the speedo cable/gear itself, including a short in the #1 Vehicle Speed Sensor circuit, the #1 VSS itself or a problem with the ECU. It threw a code because the ECU detected a problem. Did you notice any frayed or damaged wires when you removed the cluster? How about under the hood? Do all your other gauges & dash lights work? Any other issues with (dash) lights? Have you checked/cleaned your grounds? The fact that the speedo never really worked correctly screams electrical issue (to me anyway).

This probably hasn't been a whole lot of help, but it starts somewhere, and you did find the best T100 board in existence. Hopefully someone else will chime in that has had this problem or knows more than me. Keep posting as you work through this issue.

Again...welcome aboard.

Thank you for responding, out of two toyota forums you are the first to let me know I'm not speaking to myself.

I don't see this being an electric issue. When installed the gear is not making contact with the internal gear as it is not turning the speedometer cable inside the cab. So it can't drive the speedometer even if it wanted to.

My big issue is what the hell has caused this gear to be unable to be seated inside the transmission.

I can turn it freely when installed into the transmission. WTF? Its the correct part, was an IDENTICAL match to the part removed. Why is it not working?

OK, did some poking around. I did see a post where a guy got the po500 code and fixed it by topping off his tranny fluid while the vehicle was hot. I'm assuming you have an auto. How's the fluid level? The inner gear may need adequate fluid/pressure to engage the speedo??

Sounds like the cable might be bad or stripped out on the connecting side to the transmission gear. Snap some piccies of the parts and post them. ;)

I don't believe you've replaced the speedometer cable yet, correct? :D

The gear that drives the speedometer gear should be pinned/keyed on the output shaft. You'd have to disconnect the tail shaft to look and see if it's still in place. It's possible that it's been sheared and there's just enough friction to drive the gear without any load but not when the cable is hooked up to it. Might be worth it to pull the tail shaft and take a peek. ;)

Have you tested the speedometer gear with something like a toothpick in the slot and see if you can stop the gear from moving while the transmission is in gear? ;)

I have taken a power drill to the speedometer cable, then put my phone on video mode watching it.

Ran drill, speedo goes right up to 25mph. The cable is not broken.

So I think I have it figured out.

The transmission is painted gray. It MUST be a rebuild. I took a closer look at the old speedo gear and the new one and they are a different size. Same length, same markings same everything but one is a few mm's wider and that is the old one.

I ordered the new part for my model year, maybe this rebuilt trans is from an older model with a different size speedo gear.

New one that doesn't work has an 11 - 29 marking on the cog, old one 11-27

So.. guess I have a transmission from an older model in my truck... anyone know how to find out what year?

11:29 should be the correct one. Part number should be 33403-39245. The 29 designates the number of teeth. So the 29 tooth gear should be wider than the 27 tooth gear because there are more teeth and it needs to turn slower, no?

The auto speedometer gears are the 6:xx series. 2WD and 4WD speedo gears are not supposed to be interchangeable but I don't know that fer a fact. :(

11:30 is what goes into the 4WD. Part number is 33403-29105.

Here's a thread that sheds some light on the various speedo gears. ;)
http://www.soarerworld.com/forum/showthread.php?29947-Speedometer-Gears-Spindel&p=241496#post241496

Matching up the 11:27 speedo gear...that would make it a RN80 frame. Isn't that a Toyota pickup frame? ;)

Maybe but the 29's not making contact. I've eliminated all other variables, and this is a rebuilt transmission. They don't come painted grey from the factory.

Yer T-100 is supposed to have the W59 transmission which was bolted up to a 2rzfe or 3rzfe engine.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_W_transmission

It's possible that the W59 transmission you have could've come from a Tacoma or 4Runner 2WD or 4WD. :(

My 1996 T-100 2.7L long bed is an auto...so no help there. :(

Can you tell if the metal driving gear in the transmission is scalloped out? It shouldn't be since the speedometer gear is plastic and would probably wear before the driving gear would.

So what models took the 11-27 gear?

It worked before it wore out and the 29
Isn't so I'm stuck here what would you do?

Probably find a 11-27 gear

So what models took the 11-27 gear?

It worked before it wore out and the 29
Isn't so I'm stuck here what would you do?

Probably find a 11-27 gear
Part number fer the 11:27 gear is 33403-39135. Discounted price online is about $29 plus shipping. Looks like MSRP is around $40. I guess that's better than a few hundred bucks plus install fer a different transmission. :D

Update.

The new gear (11:27 ratio) worked.

Looks like I have a rebuilt trans from a 4runner or older Toyota truck in my T100

While they look similar you can def tell the one gear is larger. The white gear is the correct one.

Glad you worked it out...that took a little detective work! A non-functional speedo is super annoying and (for me) nerve wracking.

Of course I don't revisit this thread until smog is due. So the speedo gear worked for all of a week before crapping out just like the old one. Honestly, got it to pass smog I didn't care and moved on. Now its time to deal with it again...

I'm so confused on this truck, why the gear won't connect to the internal gear and work. The cable is fine its the mating to the interior gear.

I think the drive gear or whatever you call the gear internally on the trans is the issue. I have no clue what speedo gear I should have on here but I can see the 11-27 is worn out and likely damaged by the metal gear internally on the trans.

I guess I can get another gear, hope it lasts long enough to get me to pass inspection without throwing a code or I can remove trans and look further into it. Can anyone tell me how I can tell what model truck this transmission came out of? I can't see any numbers or stampings on it anywhere. Or how to lookup the correct drive gear for this 97' 4 cyl t100 5 spd.

I have the still new 11/29 correct driven gear that never was installed. Frustrating the back half of the trans has to come off for this.

Further updates.

Removed the rear case off the trans. I needed to see the drive gear I knew it was the wrong one but no clue as to which one it was.

It was an 11-31 drive gear. So, I need to order the correct 11-29 and reinstall. I have a new 11-29 from when I originally went to fix this issue. Hopefully that should have me sorted. A little nervous about getting the cases sealed and back together while in the truck but I'll do my best.
