My Mom finally took her '06 Corolla for transmission service. She took it to the dealer and they told her she needed her transmission replaced. So she went ahead with it. It cost her nearly $7K for everything.
Here's the history: She had been getting a CEL for the last 4 years or so but never had any driveability issues It would only go on if she drove it on the freeway and then go out after some time. She is elderly so she rarely if ever drives the freeway anymore. I've driven the car a few times while visiting her in CA. It drove fine each time even when the light went on. I drove it mainly on the freeway so i was driving at the usual freeway speeds of 65+.
She had it regularly serviced for oil changes but no transmission service. The place she took it to would check fluid levels each time but nothing unusual was reported like off color or burned fluid.
She was aware she needed the transmission fluid changed but put it off until now.
The car has almost 89K miles. It's hard to believe it would need a new transmission at that mileage. My Mom bought it new and the car has never been driven hard. Unfortunately she did not seek my advice before getting the work done. I live in WA state so I could not just drive down to check things out though I probably should have run codes when I was doing my yearly visit.
I think she was taken by the dealer but she really likes her car so she would have probably done anything to keep driving it.

Check out these causes. Sounds more like an electronic/electrical problem at the start.
Over four years time it may have caused internal TCC/trans problem.

Causes of this DTC may include: Wiring harness to transmission shorted to ground Torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid internal short Transmission control module (TCM)

Yes I read this earlier. If it's something that prevented the TC from locking, I have a feeling she could have kept driving her car if it was She only drove surface streets inn the last year. The dealer told her her transmission would lock up in time. I personally don't believe that. If the check engine light comes on again, I'm going to get personally involved with the stealership despite living a 1000 miles away.
